just did some work on stanley's car, he's the owner of the therapy fishing boats out of haulover. he told me one of his captians (sean) caught a 50"er while trolling in a rain storm yesterday (friday). 200' of water on a ballyhoo. i think i might try a little shallower the next time we go. Ray

There was a report of one being fought in 100' of water just north of Boca earlier this year. The guys were on a flats boat fishing for kingfish. Fought it for about an hour... got it close to the boat... but the leader was too short and the tail wore through the main line before they could get a gaff in it.
About a year ago, I saw a boat pitching baits at something moving on the surface. (approx 300ft deep off Delray) As I trolled by it looked like 2 shark fins, but was black. (not a manta) Pretty sure that was a sword too. Hey... fish have tails.

This past spring, acting on a tip from one of my buddies that worked on one of the Lauderdale charter boats, I set up in shallow and cleaned up. By shallow I mean between 400 and 700 feet. Multiple sightings of fish on the surface had been reported. Apparantly they spent the night there as well...until they were welcomed aboard for a boat ride.

There was a story in Marlin Magazine 2 years ago about a fellah going to Grand Cayman and wanting to catch a swordie off of the wall. The locals said that nobody had caught a sword in 2 months. Then, not a half hour later, a dadgum giant swam THROUGH THE HARBOR and they caught it! If I remember correctly, they did something crazy like free gaff it with a flier and cleated it off to the dock.

just2fish,
Yep, 600' water depth, like as in good Dolphin water. When I started getting back into this stuff about 6-7 years ago the first nite out after years and years of no darkside fishing, I caught my first fish in 600' right between Pacific and Triumph. I usually fish the 1000' ledge on the dark nights and the 1500' "whoopdies" on the bright nights. Capt. Jim The BEAST |

I've seen major schools of Ballyhoo in the hydraglow out in 1100' of water in the fall, winter and spring.
You guys remember reading about the Swordfish they caught in Florida Bay in 6' of water? Capt. Jim The BEAST |

Thought I'd add to the thread,
Fileted a Sword Donkey 2 years ago and it had a French Grunt in it's belly. French Grunts don't go past the reefline, let alone past 1,000 feet of water. Use to work on the L & H out of Miami, Neil caught one in 160ft off Lauderdale during the sailfish Kickoff in December. Jimmy Lewis has caught several on Gog rods while gog fishing in less than 300 ft. ( during the night though) While fishing the Bob Lewis 2 years ago we had an est, 300+ free jump twice and then take a look at our short kite bait, never ate, but what a cool site to see a 300+ sky rocketing towards your spead in broad daylight. You never know, strange things happen out there. |

Thats definitely what I call, "being quick on the draw." I think the camera would have fallen out of my hands!
