I used to live in Cali (in fact we used to launch about 60 ft to the right of where that picture was taken) and I will see if I can get any info.

Update:

Turns out the fish was caught by a friend of a friend of my Uncle. It was caught about 2 weeks ago off of Catalina Island (I believe he said the 409) while Yellowtail fishing some kelp patties (or paddy hopping, as we call it in Cali). They spotted the fish on the surface (more than likely feeding on the Yellowtail- a cousin of our Amber Jacks here in FL  ) and hooked up with a slow trolled 8# Bonita. Very nice fish, especially for San Diego! Needlesss to say, I will be bringing my Sword gear on my next Cali trip. My Uncle says that he has heard of a few more surface being caught this year than normal and wants to give the S FL method a shot. He believes that there are bigger numbers of fish there than most might think and that they are basically untapped. I know that there are a few guys that fish them there, but not many. We'll give it a go and see what happens. It'll be a while before I make it back out there, but I will post our results.

i was talking to a friend who lives in cal, he goes on the long range boats out of mexico 2 times a year. yellow tail, wahoo and tuna fishing. he said they dont target them. if they see one sunning/finning and the boat is set up to harpoon them they will, but only if the boat is moving between spots or crusing to a spot from port. as far as he knows there is little swording over there.

Yea, I worked on some of the 1-3 day boats out of San Diego for a while and we would see them from time to time. There really aren't many guys at all that target them, so you're right in saying that Swords are primarily an incidental catch in Cali. We're going to give it a try though, and see if we can't boat a fish or two. I think that there has to be some type of population of them for guys to be seeing these bigger fish on the surface, but who knows. We're looking at some charts to find some good structure and we'll give it a shot.
