Default Venice La. sword report

I made my third trip out of Venice looking for swords last night. I set up in not quite clean green water. More so just to see if I could catch one in the dirty water. I didn't have to long to wait a fat 48 1/2 fish swam through the light and ate the tip rod. After getting the fish in the boat and evrything reset I went 0 for 3 on the next bites. All I manged to get hooks into was a hammerhead. So the final tally was 1 for 4. The good thing is I actualy got to catch the fish. So I invited him home for a barbecue on the fourth. Once I thought I would have to go visit you guys in Florida for a sword fix. But it looks as if we have a pretty good fishery over here for them. Now the decision what to catch yellowfin or swords.
Capt. Mike

Mike,
That is fantastic news. I'm glad to hear it. Haven't heard much about swording in your area since the longliners. Are you the first to give it a shot in your area or just the first to spread the news?

I don't want to take anything away from Capt. Mike, but there have been some other captains getting in on the Gulf sword bite over the last year or two. While I personally haven't fished with Mike, I'm hoping to soon. Looks like he's doing a hell of a job on these gulf swords.

Longlining for swords was banned in parts of the gulf (desoto canyon) the same time as the straits of florida. Let's hope it stays that way.

Out of Pensacola, we have about a 60 mile run from the pass to the sword grounds. Fortunately, most offshore trolling trips venture out that far, so it's easy to do an overnighter for swords.

Fishing the Pensacola International tourney this weekend. It sucks swords aren't a money fish. I might actually get to sleep on the boat this trip.

Don't go to LA for unicorns... the long liners took them all years ago.

Great job Mike.

Now we can all start saying that we can get the yft over on the east side now because one was caught out of the 69 boats in the tourny

That is pretty sick though, yellowfins AND swords

You can also catch swordfish and yellowfin, albacore, bigeye in the same night in the Northeast Canyons. In fact, a lot of swordfish were caught last year. We haven't landed a swordfish while fishing the canyons on my boat, but we have caught loads of dolphin, yellowfins and albacore as well as makos.

Daytime trolling gives shots at both big blue (state record is over 1000lbs, and many are in the 400-800lb class) and white marlin, bigeye, yellowfin, and albacore tuna, as well as dolphin and wahoo.
