Well, we decided to try the inside shallow numbers again last night...
We went 1 for 1 with a release of a 50inch fish around 60lbs or so. Fish ate a squid on the tip rod down 300ft. Also had an even smaller fish follow it up.. First timer out got sick even though it was nice out, so we headed in early. May try again tonight. I hear it was slow on the 50 line from the radio. Tightlines ST |

Yea we were on the low 51 when the storm came that managed to blow us out to the mid 49 line. haha
Had one nice runoff within seconds after the rain stopped and one very odd cut off that took about 35 feet of leader and wind-on. It was weird though because the line was definitely chomped in half It was a nice night out there besides the storm

For everyone that stayed home last night, you can feel better knowing you made the right choice.
One hour after getting set up we got to sit through one nasty storm. Blew me all the way out to the 49 when I started on the 52. Thanks Relentless for the heads up with the weather radar. We stayed on the first drift till 1 with no action at all. I swear that lightning shuts off the bite. On the next drift I moved back inside to the 53 and ended up with a couple of nice dolphin and a new boat record for swordfish.....the smallest one I have ever seen caught. It might have weighed 8 pounds. Looked like one of those mini wall mounts. Must have been one hungry fish cause it ate the biggest squid I had out. Other than that we had no other action, and one hell of a fireworks show.

No problem with the help on the radar.
A baby sword attacked the big squid ? lol We had quite an interesting first five minutes out there, the second a squid hit the water a baby dolphin came out of no where and attempted to pull drag haha As soon as he appeared he was gone and a pair of nice size triggerfish that for whatever reason wandered about 17 miles offshore and tried to suck off the squid. It was a menace but once we attached the 32 ounce lead it flew by the triggers face and left. The pair of triggers continued to feel safe under the boat and hung out the whole time until sundown.

Looks as if the bite never picked up while I was gone  .I agree with Ollie;the bite really seems to shut off if there is lightning of any kind.Even cloud or heat lightning seems to push the fish down.It must be because the flashes cause discomfort in thier huge, light gathering eyes;forcing them to go down beyond our reach.

I see your point, however the light from a LP is steady and easy to get used to,and lightning comes in very bright, quick flashes.I know my night vision gets destroyed by lightning.I can never remember having a bite during a thunderstorm, but I sure have gotten alot of bites next to an LP or a lightstick.

Question on the bright flashy light hypothesis?
Don't some swordfishermen actually use bright strobe lights to attract swordfish? (Bright expensive strobes, in addition to those other inexpensive flashers, $7-$10.) If this is true, it could possibly contradict the bright light theory from lightning. Although I could agree that Bonafide lightning flashes, the noise they produce, and/or Barometric pressure change may deter the swordfish bite. Just asking because of these two different perspectives. |

The problem with the lightning hypothesis is that most people are packing their gear and heading for the barn when it starts cracking. I have just never had a good night when there was lightning in the vicinity. Most of those occasions I was not about to hang out and try to prove otherwise.
I once had a bolt hit the water about two feet from the stern of the boat as we were running from a storm. I was sitting on the floor just in front of the motor. The force of the blast blew me into the leaning post and knocked me out cold. Did some hearing damage as well. To say I am cautious about this kind of weather is an understatement. I for one absolutely hate this time of year. I'd much rather have rough water than have to deal with the threat of electrocution.
