Default First Timer 0-2 But Happy

Went Saturday night for the first time. 3 adults and 2 11 yrear olds. To keep it short 0 for 2. First fish I pulled a newbie and increased drag after about 10 min battle. BONEHEAD move, it pulled the hook very shortly after. 2nd fish follwed the bait to the top when my 11 yr old was checking the bait. Fish was between 150 and 200 lb right by the boat in the light. Told him to stop reeling and the sword slashes the bait, knocks the electralume off ($40 floats away) and then takes the bait. as soon as my son sees this he tries to set the hook instead of letting the sword eat. Needless to say he pulls the bait and Mr. Swordie swims away. Got a small spinner on the next drift then went home. Lots of action on the first trip and planning the next. Although we lost 2 fish, we got valuble experience for our next trip. What channel do most people monitor when out swording? Tried to listen to other people but could not find anyone.

I dont no about that, I was reading a forum about a week ago and someone said when they know they're tight they tighten the drag to 3/4 and crank !! :???:

Theres never as much chatter as during the day, even if a whole fleet is out there

Theres definitely some great numbers in fish moving through here right now

Better to lose a fish early than after a 3 hour battle on light drag.
You'll get em next time - and make sure you attach the electralume a different way - it shouldn't fall off even if it is whacked.
Good luck.

The Electrolume should be clipped on the your main leader (300lb).
Tie in a couple of black waxed floss stops so it doesn't slide up or
down. It should never fall off. A rubber band for the wieght is OK.
After the fish strats to run many want the weight to fall off.

Wat rubberbands are you using that are fully working ??
Those "little, black, wicked strong ones" worked before if you put two but saturday night we couldnt keep a weight on for our life :?:

Were ready to switch to a strand of copper nosewire wrapped up that wont come off unless it has a sword on it

I use the super dooper black rubberbands of Death..............I never tried to break one by hand, It would probably hurt.

No seriously.

The big ones or the little thin ones that make a nice mark in your hand when it breaks and snaps on you ??

i have also talked to tons of guys that go swording here in south fla. some fish light drags and some have drags set at strike right from the get go. 16-18 lbs depending on your line. i personally use very light till the fish burns then go to full strike. i even had to go past strike on the 80 incher sat. after 2 1/2 hours. the hook was in the corner of its mouth!

The light was clipped to the leader on the crimp, wrong place I guess. I put them on one side of the loop after. As far as rubberbands go, I bought a bag from RJ Boyles and I never lost a weight. They were about 1/4" thick tan colored. I was fishing 20" leaders and the fish by the boat was whacking the light and the bait was behind him, I am trying 10' leaders so the bait will be closer to the light. Will be going out Sunday night weather permitting for the second trip. Was going Friday but a Bimini trip came up so will do that first. Anybody else out Sunday give a shout on 72. BTW this forum gives great advise for newcomers, I do not think I could have done this without it. Thanks to all the people that post with help and advise.

We're gonna try a few different ones, #64 from Office Depot or Boyle's or Custom Rod and Reel. We'll try them all
