Nick, Barry,
The only way that fish is 47-48 is with extensions. That fish is no larger than 43-44 come on guys lets call it like it is! He already said there were 2 pups and I guarentee that fish aint 61in. I am sorry lets be truthful.

I usually try to stay positive but im afraid i'd have to see the tape measure on that little one.
We have thick black magic marker lines at 47" marked on the engine cover, when we get a "maybe" fish we need only set the fish on the marks for a second to know length. If even close back in it goes ,a little swishin till it revives + the pup swims off. Pissed i bet but alive. We dont take time to find a tape measure + measure a pup. Wish i coud see a couple 47" marks stickin out from under that little one.

Usually stay away from threads like this but I happened to have some pictures of some recently caught fish

Just put a couple more pictures in the Gallery of a live pup that we released that overall length was around six feet 60 inches did not measure due to the size, and a picture of a 57 inch fish across the 8 ft 5 in beam over all length unknown but it would not fit across the boat from tail to tip of sword. From the door to the edge of the chair is around 36 inches to get an idea of the girth. I have put a 55 inch fish in a 21 foot boat along the cockpit and there was no walking room unless this 20 ft boat has a 10 ft beam.

I do not know how to move them to the thread but I am sure someone else does so you can see the comparison.

Ok guys don't scare him away.First off congrats on your fish looks like you guys had fun.As to the life left in the fish in the pic?The camera is a bad judge of life and I know for sure it will not live on the deck :???: If it was released it had a shot.If it was not released I am hope it was legal. We can guess at the size but from a pic like that it is hard,No one can tell from that pic the exact size.So in closing good job guys get a slob next time and no one will say anything  Wait yes they will they will say you should not have killed a breeder  sometimes you just can't win

OK, Quack, not trying to scare anyone off. i just wanted to ask them because the eyes on the little one look smoked which means dead fish, released or not. i was hoping that it was a trick of the camera, and if not, someone should give these new buds some advise on how to get small fish in the boat faster and released unharmed.

the one on the deck definetly looks legal - nice going guys! sword steaks for dinner first time out!

i know you guys are new and getting a pic of the first sword caught often exceeds the desire to get a pup back into the water quickly, but now that you have some pics and everyones cherry is busted, maybe you can use a little knowhow on limiting pup mortality - based on our experience.

you'll be able to tell a pup sooner or later by the way they fight. when you feel its a pup tighten down and try to get it in the boat as fast as you can. if you pull the hook, oh well, it wasnt a slob anyway.

we dont bring obvious pups on the boat anymore at all. just remove the hook boatside and revive till they kick back and let em swim off. smaller fish that are close, we have measuring lines marked on the engine cover, as Randy said. 2 guys is plenty to lift a high 40's or low 50s fish into the boat. 1 guys controls the head by holding the bill and the other lifts the tail over the side. put it down on the marks and if its short or real close, back into the drink - if not, slam on the deck and high fives all around.

sword steaks for dinner!

again, not trying to slam you guys, just trying to provide what little help i can.

Yes Sir QQ, not trying to scare them off either but the fish in the pick was my brothers first, and we snapped a quick photo and back in it went. Brother was a bit upset since he did not get a picture with it but we did not want to kill it so it was back in the water fast. Would rather go without the photo and catch it another day.

First Rule
If it gets to the boat in less 20 minutes and I can get control of it just by the bill and pick it out of the water it is most likely to small to keep hook is taken out and it is released.

Second Rule
If I can not lift over the side by myself it’s a keeper.

Fishesdred Congrats to you and your crew on your 3/3 get a slob next time out.

Yet another post that starts a firestom. If this was their first fish and they wanted to get that picture, they can definitely be excused for any harm that may have come to it. First sword fever can cause this to happen regardless of the fishes size. Besides the fact that no matter what you do and how fast you do it you are still gonna have some undersize mortality; i.e. foul hooked fish. You just can't seem to get them to the boat fast enough. So, all I can say its amazing some new guys got three fish on Saturday night when a lot of us seasoned veterans got none. SO, the more important question to me, if you don't mind me asking, is what planet......errr....numbers were you fishing?

Everyone here has posted and bragged about their FAT 47 -55 inch fish so everyone needs to lay off before you scare the dude away. Nice fish guys- most importantly make sure you report your catch.

Sorry guys! I know James very well... We have fished together most of our lives. He would never keep an illegal fish and he knows how to handle one. Those were just from the camera shot. WTG James on poppin 3 cherries.

Good job guys. They said they went 3 for 3 and the only fish you see on deck is the bigger of the three. The haze in the eyes might be from the q-beam the guys holding in the direction of the fish. Its amazing how people are quick to judge without even knowing if they released the fish or not he said they went 3/3 he didn't say they killed 3. For someone who hasn't caught his own legal fish Nick you sure are a expert on swordfishing, give credit when credit is due. I do not know the crew from this boat so can not say what did actually occur just upsetting to see people bash someone without knowing all the facts.

Drew, I wasn't Bashing.... I was on their side . ..I said the fish looked/may have been legal
As far as being an expert... hell NO!. Been taught them though and have learnd a few things on my own. I anwser questions on here when asked, but am no expert! If I don't have the answer, I don't talk.
Rumor has it you've caught a few swords , so I don't want to get on your bad side. Hopfully I'll see you at the Boca Bash Swordfish weigh in Friday .

If I haven't said already, Nice job guys! That 60"er is sweet!

3 for on the maidan tripo is awsome! I can't wait to put my first legal fish in the boat(as Darkside pointed out lol)! I've had some bad luck I guess!

I didn't mean to be harsh Nick, just seems people jump to conclusions without conformation if they did or didn't release the 2 smaller fish. Congrats should be given cause I wish i caught three fish on my first trip, that should be the subject of discussion going 3/3 on maiden voyage.
