Welcome to the forum Fishesdred, seeing that it is your first post. Thanks for the post.
And don't mind the critical comments on your first fish(es). I got dinged by a fellow poster on one or two of my first posts but get along fine now with the instigator. But it did not stop me from posting and I did not even have a swordfish in the boat to report for several months after getting the Swordfishing bug. Good job on hooking up with 3 fish on your Cat's first swordrun, Dude Crush Man. My only comment on small fish is that 47"inches is the legal minimum: I am glad it is that number for at least one fish, now for any and up to 3. Just in case a small fish does not survive, you can still keep it without any legal hassles, just the peanut gallery will get you. I think most anglers on this forum will release small legal fish after there is a fish in the boat. It is always your call. |

It's as it should be . Take into consideration the other side of this coin . The other side is if people see what they think is a small dead pup and if they feel intimidated in saying anything because others will put them down for speaking up they wont. I seem to remember a bunch of conservationists claiming they are trying to save this fishery in a recent thread. Everyones gonna have to make up their mind, Either you want possible "discrepancies" brought forward and people to know that others are watching and will speak up , or you dont. It's exactly as it should be .If you think someone is possibly damaging the fishery and if you claim you are for saving the fishery it is YOUR DUTY to speak up. Whether or not this pup is legal or not i dont know but I give the fisherman the benefit of the doubt. But.. Im not going to send a signal to people just starting this fishing that if they kill off pups noone will say anything. In my opinion it's as it should be.

The rules for keeping swordfish
1.keep one 48in fish.half the people say you should have let it go. 2.keep two 48in fish.3/4 of the people say you should have let one go. 3.keep one 48in and a 55in.half the people say you should have let one go even if the smaller fish was first. 4.keep one 48in a 55in and a 62in.half the people will call you a name and say you are raping the ocean. 5.keep one 80in or better and they will say you killed a breeder and should have let it go. 6.The only fish you will never get bashed on is one 50in to 60in fish. My opinion is if you are within the rules.47in up to 3 fish per boat or one per angler up to 3 you should NEVER get bashed :!: The rules are the rules period end of story. If you choose to be selective and release legal fish that is great if not and you do not break the rules great. We all need to tag more fish that we do release. We need to work together not fight. But if you see something that is not right you do need to call that to everyones attention.I understand some people may do wrong but I think most people do the right thing.

QQ and the rest positive/negative thinkers on this forum,
I have only gone on six Swording trips, and have posted most of the results, and have been bashed a couple times. By you “QQ” when we forgot the GPS, did not have a back up handheld, and recently with the fire storm from “CO” on the drag setting and letting that 57 inch fish dump 500 yards on me on the first run. Both times we came home with fish and still were bashed, but I did learn and now we carry a handheld GPS, and have tighten up the drag settings a bit. So good or bad as this might have been seen in every guys/gals own opinion we dumb fisherman seem to learn by mistakes, trial and error, and sometimes advice from another one of our kin. I kind of do it all, but leaning mostly on the learning by mistake ](*,) ](*,) This is a great forum for all us to discuss views without getting in a knock out drag down bar room brawl and I think everyone that is reading these threads are learning or teaching someone else the ropes of Swording or fishing in general, but when it is spiced up it seems we get more info out of a thread because you get just about everyone’s .02 at the end of it all. I bet Fishesdred is going out to get a better digital camera with a good flash before the next trip out to the darkside  Tight Lines Catching |

Well said catching
We have to take the good with the bad and try to learn as much as we can.The only bashing that gets under my skin is the fish bashing when some one is within the rules.I am hoping to go tonight but not sure if I can :???:

The rules are we can wipe out dolphin (10each) at 20" peanuts , kill off the juvenile grouper at 24" ,take two 24" kings(snakes) and take 47" swords three at a time all long before they have reproduced to propagate the species. Got it ! Thats the rules .
We all know that our fisheries management people cant possibly be wrong. This has just got to stabilize and maybe increase the fish population , Look how well it's workin so far ! Sorry Quack I respect your opinion but I gotta disagree with you on this one buddy. Just too many years watchin these "rules" as our fishery does a steep downward spiral to what we have today. |

I understand Randy and it may seem strange with my other post but I agree with you  The rules are there and unless the nmfs changes them that is what it is.If you keep what you keep that is good for you and if you are worried as most are you will keep a smaller number of fish. But if a person chooses to keep there limit that is ok because we are all playing by the same rules. You may not agree with the rules but you can not bash a person that is within the limit. If you meet that person you may suggest they keep less fish but thats it.My views do not change in person.
A single paragraph or sentence never tells the whole story behind a post.Unless it is RT  Just remember everyone :!: Let he without sin toss the first lead.

It's good to see this thread has turned into a catagory 5 storm of opinions. I think I'm gonna put up my shutters now!
Catching I swear I wasn't bashing you, I just flew off the handle a little with my surprise at the line loss! NOW......... about those 4 missed fish Saturday night.......... I think I'm gonna invest in a good RDF so I can get those numbers from you! BUT seriously its good to see we can all agree to disagree. In the end it just matters that you can live with your decisions of what to keep and what not to keep in this fishery. I hope everyone realizes that by the time you add up all the costs and time involved just to get out there and catch one of these fish, that you realize it would have been much cheaper just to go to the local fish market and buy it instead. BUT, then again, where's the fun in that? ![]() P.S. SOMEONE, WHO SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS, NEEDS TO TRY MOVING THAT SINKER FURTHER THAN 12 FEET FROM THE BAIT! IF that is what you said to me on the radio Saturday night. IF not please ignore this comment. AND AS A FURTHER DISCLAIMER: Nothing I ever say on this forum is to be regarded, taken, or thought of as bashing in any way, shape, or form. I think that as long as its within the letter of any REASONABLE LAWS everyone should be able to do whatever the hell they want. ALSO the opinions and suggestions given by this writer have been brought on and shaped by years and years of blood, sweat, and tears trying to make a living at what, to most people, is supposedly a way to have fun. AND in addition due to some graphic writing reader discretion may be advised.

QQ whats shaking. Dam bro, i wonder if last year was all a fluke? Past two trips we have had a couple of bites. They just seem to be mouthing the dam macks and ending up trashing them. Have not been able to catch the small macks we were catching last year and I wonder if they are not eating like they were due to using frozen bait we had put up since last year. Even though we vacum the bait its not the same as fresh. Dam bro its almost May, this time last year we were 15 fish for 16 or 17 trips.
Went 100miles se last weekend and had a decent bite, got 9wahoo and 14yft. Tuna were small though, 30-50lbers. Bite was off due to current, thank god for the yft or it would have been a long run for a few wahoo. Is that you with the tile fish in the pic?? |

No I am the good looking guy in blue on the right
That is Tim with the tilefish. Great guy we were on his boat that night. Those Tuna sound good.I wish we got more yft around here.Have you tried squids and such?Maybe a small tuna or some small dolphin?I think our bite is getting ready to slow down with the tinkers heading north.

QQ, squids never did work well here. We busted out butts last year bringing in squid and the fish were taking the macks 10 to 1 over squid. Got to a point where we only fished macks. Have tried some small bonito and they have gotten bit but nothing like the little macks. Problem is getting a small enough bonito plus when you want them you can never find the dam things.
