Moon - I dont know , Our night with the most "hits" (11) was a pitch black no moon night . This biggun was on a almost full moon. We went again LAST night 4/17 and waited till the moon came up almost 12:00 and only one bite ! Exact same area . I used to think no moon was best , now i dont know again. Ps. Seas 4-6 last night . Wind howling, saw only two other boats besides us. Moon 3/4

it seem to me that if something changes out there, anything significant like the moon comes up, goes down, wind changes direction causing drift angle change, Billfisher squatting off the stern, ALMOST ANYTHING can cause the bit to turn on or shut off.

it looks to me like its less important what changes than just the fact that SOMETHING does.

I definitely have to second that. Something does seem to change that seems to turn the majority of the fish either on or off. AND it seems to happen rather quickly. Also what they are in the mood to eat is never consistent. Most nights they seem to prefer either squid or live bait. On nights when I get multiple hits it seems to be strictly one or the other, hardly ever both.
What I meant about the moon thing is that it doesn't seem to matter the phase that its in, (longliners historical catch rates seem to dictate otherwise) but its position in the sky. It's the one thing I have observed over the years that seems to have a definite pattern.

I dont know. Havent been able to find a pattern. Just dont know. Too random . Guess if you could figure it it wouldnt be so challenging. Good side is the harder it is the less people will do it. Already hearin some humorous chatter on the radio concerning people gettin too close to each other. At least i have watched and when someone gets in trouble he gets all kinds a help comin. That may be a leftover from the old phrase "the finest kind" .

Randy/Capt Ollie/Rodchucker:

It is a real weird thing. These fish are IMPOSSIBLE to figure out and there is no pattern at all! One trip I get hit all the time with my tactics. Next trip it's Randy with his rigs. Sometimes in the full moon. Sometimes in the new moon when it's picthblack. Sometimes at the beginning of the night. Sometimes at the end of the night. Sometimes at the 49 line. Sometimes the 50 or 51. It's soooooooo incredibly random to catching these fish. Anyone that thinks they got it figured out is fooling themselves. The most experienced guy I know who has been doing this since the 70's said there is no distinct pattern. It's when a hungry fish swims by your bait and that's really it guys! Can one rig attract the fish more than the next. Probably, maybe, who the hell knows?! This is a crapshoot guys! I just love going out there and rolling the dice after I put full odds behind the line and literally too!
Tight Lines and God bless You All,
I know my 350# + Slob is waiting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!
