Boradbill, i see your formula but i can GARENTEE if there are 275 boats out there, NO WHERE NEAR 275 have a sword on the deck. How many do, I am not sure, from what i see and hear i wuld say 25-30%. Every night I go sword fising i know 3-5 buddies out. And wweather it be me or them we are lucky if half has a fish on board. My next question is Do LLer's not have more then 500 hooks on it?

Oh and btw I am COMPLETLY out of Swordfish and the wind is blowing all week.

Got some Pumpkin for you. I'll bring it Friday when I pick up the coolers. Gonna be around in the afternoon for a frosty?

Best Catch: When I look at a Commercial Fishing Vessel I see 300 million Americans and you only see the Crew

i agree that not nearly all the vessels have a kill onboard, but from the vessels that have 4, 6, 8 releases in a single night and i am certain there are many, don't you think that possibly one results in a fish dying after being set free? surely we don't believe that there is a 100% survival rate for released swordfish? that fish must be counted as well. from what i have seen out here lately, i am certain that 1 swordfish dies for each vessel that heads offshore at night. believe me the hiliners make up for the few who don't get the bites.

do LL's have more than 500 hooks? locally no, the local fleet have been reduced to mostly a 3 man operation and the long length of the leader in warmer waters makes it impossible to work more than that and retreive the gear in good time to set it again the next night.

south of the equator i worked with a 20 man crew and depending on bycatch (mostly albacore) as many as 1500-2000 hooks can be fished if the weather permits (less than 35-40kts wind, 150 ft vessel). those numbers have never been successfully fished in the northern hemisphere by american longliners in either the atlantic or pacific. it does not make sense to set more gear than can be retreived by early afternoon, the quality of fish suffers from soaking all day and the captain needs several hours to reposition the vessel on the meat for the next set. there are many variables that can turn what appears to be a good set into a total nightmare, current part offs (line breaks) for one could cost hours chasing half the gear in the opposite direction that you need to be the following night.

mitch, i knew i would find something i like about you. Vince Plye is a good guy.

Mitch- No actually have to work this Friday night.

I agree not all fish survive, but i also think ot of 250 boats less then 100 land more then 3 fish a night. I would say i have been out swording 30 trips and have only brought 4 fish to the boat 2 times. There have also been 5 trips we're we did not bring a single fish to the boat.

Wrong thing to say to me. I grabbed the bottle, made a few grunting noises and squeezed a rope of warm suntan lotion right up the middle of his back, ala Brokeback Isaacs. "Ahhhhh, was it good for you too?" I asked.

Everyone on the boat was rolling on the deck in hysterical laughter. Rick didn't find it as funny – at first. :roflmao:
