We headed out of PE at 4:00 and loaded up on runner right at the anchors of the one anchored ship out there. As soon as we dropped the sabiki's we got into them thick. We were off Halover inlet, 20 miles out by 6:00 and that when things got fun.
We decided to try to fish a 5th line as I had just bought a tld50 setup and filled it up titanium 50lbs. I have it marked just like this site says to. As I'm putting out this rod, I have it in free spool just waiting for the marker at 200 feet, and then all of a sudden the line stopped coming out like I was on the bottom. I knew my baits was just about 200feet because I could see the marker on the reel. I don't say a word to my buddy as he is letting his bait out so that we can have to lines in the water atleast. I begin to crank as fast as I can and all of a sudden I see the fish on the surface just checking us out with the squid in his mouth. I couldn't tell if he was hooked good enough, but it was a big fish and didn't want to gaff it while that blue. We got to the leader and that is when he realized he was hooked... He danced around the boat like a sailfish and then took my 50 down to about 100 yards left on the reel. He was stubborn, just chillin, to wear I couldn't see the light and then running south, but I put 15lbs of drag on him and then my buddy got the belt on me and I really slammed him with 20lbs of drag. I agree with ron38.. get these fish in fast... 35 minutes later it was completely dark and the fish was at the boat and had given up. We weighed him back at the scales at 172lbs!! My biggest fish this year. We resetup on the 50 line againa nd this time we were able to get 3 rods out before having the tip rod go off. First it just pulled like for a second and then it nailed the runner and took him down deep. Unfortunatly we lost this fish after 10 minutes. Finally we got all 5 rods out with no tangles.. 3 jugs, 2 tip rods.. and the 100ft tip rod went off again strong... I pushed the drag up to 12lbs and it was on... I fought this one from the rod holder mostly until he was close to the boat and we realeased a 30lb pup harm free within 5 minutes. Now we were 2-3. It was only 9:30pm, so we check all the lines and all the baits were either slashed or the runners were eaten by squid. I only brought out 2 squids, so I put out the rest of the runners and we had the 80 get slammed!!!!! Lasted for about 1 minute and never saw the fish... Then the last fish of the night was a hit on the 100foot tip rod... got hit 3-4 times that night.... he hit the runner and followed it up to the light but wouldn't eat anything... He hung out for about 10 minutes as I pitched whatever I could.... All the remaining lines out were all slashed... it was about a 50lb fish. GREAT NIGHT.. We stayed out until 3am, but could of called it at 10:00am and would have been happy. We are going out again, when it is calm. It was 2-4 foot, and no moon. Beautiful night. By the way we stopped using double hook rigs because of foul hooking the pups, and we are still hooking up, but I wouldn't say the ratio is even. A friend of mine explained that doulbe hook rigs are not the way to go and he is right... |

Sounds like a typical october night down here.. Last october I was tearing them up. This september was way too slow for me. The current has finally picked back up and doesn't seem to be as much bait out there as there was which is a very good thing to me. Looks like the moon is making its way back.. Till than I will be fishing my tip rods at 100ft also.

I had similar results last night, but only boated one fish. We fished all squids, didnt have time to catch the live bait as it gets darker earlier now.. but we can also get home earlier too...
Our biggest fish was 53 inches. WE kept him this time, since we have nothing in the fridge.. be we realsed a 51 incher. Also caught a grey shark, not sure what kind, but he was dead weight reeling in. I knew it wasn't a sword right a way. Damn winds are picking up... keep us updated. Jim |
