Default Broadbill

I have been looking at the size of the broadbill you guys catch. Why dont you tag and release them. They are so small.

You guys need to get down here to New Zealand and catch some real fish

Thanks, for your welcome. I understand that these may be only the only fish available to you and that the commercial fleets have all but wiped out the large fish. But how long will you even have a fishery when you take such small fish ?

We're pretty conservation minded down here. We take what we need, we have little effect on the population. There's nothing like swordin.

That's why everybody observes limits. They are set with conservation in mind.

I tend to agree with BPZN, a swords only mature enough to breed when he hits 150 or so. The limits are some what aceptable. But some people go out 4-5 nights a week ad kill 1-2 a night. Within the limits, but whatharm is it doing. I know the old agrument that we can never do what the longliners did, but we arnt helping. I think a good step for swordfish recovery would be increasing the size limit. To 70 inches or so. We need to let the pups go, even if they are "legal."

Bushpig, Show us some pictures of the ones YOU catch in New Zealand. Back in May we had one caught at 415 pounds. Numerous other fish are caught weighing over 135 pounds. Any fish over 60 inches is worth keeping. I'm sure you guys are pulling bigger fish in the summertime but I'm sure you guys have your share of small fish too. As far as guys who are going out 4-5 times a week, I haven't heard of anyone pulling 1-2 fish a night. If that was happening we wouldn't be having the number problems that we do. It's more like, on the favorable moon phases during the hot bite months that we are able to get our 3 per boat limit, at least as of right now and things are changing for the better as we speak right now. Wait till the upcoming months and see the size fish we will be pulling up, I'm sure you will be amazed.

Bushwick, If the guys down here had access to the waters of New Zeland, we would be breaking records all the time. There are no fishermen in the world like the ones In S. Fla

Have a look at the Billfish down under thread posted by Lethal. Thats what we call Broadbill. Nobody brings a fish under 300 pounds in for weighing. they would be laughed at if they did

most of our fish (at least 90%) would go over 600 pounds

I'm not sure what its like where you are, but our small fleet gets tight on several fish every night for the most part and it sure it fun!... we have our slumps, but A LOT of releasing is being done.

We have breeding grounds out here and as a result we get small fish.. but wait until the winter comes..BIgger fish come through pretty nice.

What kind of tackle are you fighting 600lb plus fish on?

Rather than argue about fish size and who catches what, I would like to hear how you guys fish for them... Hook size, baits, drag, etc.

Most boats use 37kg. I think some may have moved up to 60 to try and shorten the fight time. The problem we have with long fights is sharks. The markos are huge in the broadbill grounds and from what I hear arnt that worried about the tuna bombs any more.

Out of interest. What is the minimum size fish you guys can keep ?
