July 4th 2004 Fishing Report by Mike Grimm

I got the call from Doug, to go out on July 4th. He had one guy cancel on him and had the extra seat (always a good sign with someone cancels!). We met at Lighthouse Point Marina about 6pm and we were off to the races. We had plenty of runners and a few pilchards in the well.

On the way out we ran into numerous schools of schoolies. Not really any size to them, but fun on the light tackle. We released a few and kept moving to the grounds. We arrived off Hollywood around 8pm and setup our spread. Very very slow until about midnight. And then things heated up a tad. Meanwhile we enjoyed watching the fireworks from Miami to North Fort Lauderdale.

We first got a shark bite that cleanly bit through our 250lb leader. We immediately got new baits out and were tight on what seemed to be a small swordfish. It hit a blue runner down 125 feet. We fought the fish for about 5 minutes before the hooks pulled. So now we are 0 for 1 and it is getting late.

At 1:30 we noticed the close balloon flipped. We had a squid down 150 feet with a long leader. I immediately began to crank down in 2 speed to come tight on the fish. Doug and Mark cleared the lines and the fight was on. I fought the fish from the rodholder for about 2 minutes and then passed it off to Doug. Doug was still whooped from fighting a 275 pound plus swordfish just a few weeks ago. He fought that fish for about 4 hours without the harness. So Doug, passed the fish off to the captain, Mark. Mark had the fish to the boat in about 15 minutes, but the fish was not ready to come in the boat yet.

A seesaw battle begun and we got the fish close again in about 30 minutes. This time I hand-lined the leader and Doug stuck him with the Sword Slayer Harpoon (Swordslasher Fishing Products, Inc.) The extension feature on the harpoon is ideal for big suborn fish. The deal was closed and we brought the fish aboard.

Back at Lighthouse Point Marina the fish weighed 110 pounds exactly. Another great night on the water with a great fishing team.
