Teenager Catches 527-Pound Swordfish Off Lake Worth
POSTED: 2:03 pm EDT October 12, 2005

PALM BEACH SHORES, Fla. -- A freezer filled with 350 pounds of swordfish steaks -- that's what a New York teenager eventually got out of a three-hour fight Tuesday with a 527-pound swordfish off Lake Worth.

John Padden, 17 of Islip, N.Y., was aboard the 39-foot boat The Getaway with his father and some friends when the fish took the bait.

He says he fought the fish standing up with the fishing rod harnessed to his body.

The fish was too big to fit through the boat's transom door. The boat's crew finally used ropes to haul the 13-foot fish over the stern.

Padden's fish is 85 pounds lighter than the state record-setting swordfish caught in Key Largo in 1978.

You guys ought to look at the comments made on a Forum in the UK about this fish

They are clueless with their comments. They should learn more about a species before pointing a finger at someone.

Everyones entitles to their own opinion. One must understand the difference between a swordfish and marlin and the fishery involved also.

I went and read the 2 pages worth, I am taken back, I just wonder if any of these people have even the slightest clue how many die on a longline every day all over the world ?
Are they pissed that we bring one home to eat ? Im sure if they had a fishery like this at thier back door there would more than a few comming home to eat.
The sport fisherman is a scratch on the surface compared to hired killers called longliners.

Great catch indeed.

I would like to see recreational anglers do more catch and release, but as you have stated, we dont even scratch the surface so the releases are pretty much only for our morals, as there is a good chance that fish could be picked up on a longline to the north.

Ive been out swordfishing off south florida now about a dozen times, of those dozen times we had a few nights with only a bite or 2, and other nights with just one bite in which we boated a fish. I still think this fishery has a long way to go, but it sure is a prize for the florida guys.

Too bad we cant control what goes on in international waters. I'll be lucky if I ever hook a white marlin in my lifetime.

That is the problem, we cant regulate what goes on overseas, and makes us look like iddiots.

You rec guys in FL are doing a good job by reporting your catch and keeping tabs on the closed zones.

I am a big catch and release guy, as I prefer to see a fish swim away than dead in my boat, but I don't blame the recreational guys that swordfish one bit, as it is compeltely legal and insufficent to the quota.

I bet tonight there might be 1 to 5 recreational boats out there right now that might boat 3 fish total if they are lucky.

Whereas there are probably a dozen plus longline boats setting gear to the north.

WOW! I was the one who caught the fish, and I can't believe what those guys had to say! To each his own, but I'd like to see them release a fish that size, and if anyone was wondering, all the meat is going to good use. I know alot of people who are going to eat good for the next few days! Here's a few more pics:
