100---150 ft 300 lb lead is about 40 feet before you let out all the wind on

longer leader, putting bait further back brings on more snagged bottom ?

Good question. I am pretty new at daytiming, but 100-125' seems to be the sweet spot for us. We like to attach the weight to flossed loop or bimini approx 100' from the hook. 40lb test mono works fine.

The rationale is that if you reel up 100' from bottom (and watch your machine) you should rarely if ever snag bottom w your lead (or leader.) If / when you do hang up, IMHO it's better to break the 40 lb test & lose a weight (or rebar) than to lose a windon, light, hook and weight etc.

I would imagine 300' could snag bottom if you have light current day & only come up 100-150' etc.

Something Irie does is pretty neat. IE he uses "lay down bar" like they use for tilefish. This enables him to drop straight down w/o tangles and get more bottom time (instead of running into current & then backing up & waiting till you are straight up and down to hit bottom)

Its nice being able to drop straight down without having to move the boat....
