Default 1/1 last night plus an Oil Fish

Headed out last night with my normal crew minus Kevin. We Set up on the first drift when I noticed my long ballon moving in slowly. No clicks just a heavy balloon. We reel it in and to my surprise an Oil Fish WOW!
Does anyone know if they can be eatin. It had sharp scales and a real greyish black color. And bye the way we also caught a 58in Sword at 1:45, long night. It hit my tip rod at 150ft with a squid on a blue green LP.

Good job Albar, we tried something difference and started our drift on the 26.08 to 26.15 along the 49.0 line last night.

We got tight before it was completely dark on a monster rainbow runner and fought the fish for 45 minutes only to have the hooks pull and got the bait back flopping around like he had never been touched...

The squids went untouched and no fish in the boat... Wierd night, start out stormy for us and then lost all wind, my angler was sweating pretty profusely on that fish.

We'll get em next time.

We actually fished nort as well up to the 26.15 on the 49.8-49.1. It was a strange night though we never had a bite till 1:45. We heard a lot of action on the radio early but it seemed to stop and then nothing. Bye the way we found a whole mangrove snapper in the belly of the sword. I am positive they are feeding on the reefs during the day. Madey it is time I start reef fishing again  .

Mike, I think he is in the Bahamas on a charter. I called his cell and left a message. When I got to the boat ramp last night two guys were talking about a huge sword just weighed in at LHP Marina. They said it was a large sportfishing boat and I know kevin was running a trip last night on a large viking.

Default So you caught an oilfish

Hey Albar1:

Rough scales and you stand correct, it sounds like an oilfish. How deep was your bait on that line? Were you chumming?

Oilfish - Do not eat those. Escolar, yummy, what time should I come over. Although Escolar are high in wax ester content which can have a laxative effect (Fisherman's Laxative you know). I have not had Escolar in large portions like as a steak or a big piece of filet. But if you have ever tried it as Sashimi it tastes absolutely delightful. It is rich and buttery but the portion size is generally small.

Unless of course you are like Captain Mitch, that will challenge others to Sushi eating contests. Load up on too much Escolar then you may need to stay close to the facilities.

Good job on making it out there and getting some fish even without your faithful companion. But what I can't figure out.... is why anyone in their right mind would want to go out fishing on a large Viking when they can be out fishing on a 37' Cat.

Actually I am just kidding. I had the fortunate pleasure to see and go aboard the Bimini Twist out of Coral Gables the last time I was in, well you my never guess, ok it was in Bimini. That was a new 57' Viking: I was in love. I especially was drooling over twin deep drop rods equipped with two LP motors mounted to Shimano 80s and some not to shabby bend butt rods as well. Some people just have no respect for money. By the way, how do you like your new upgrade?

Shark Tagger - Where are you picking up your Rainbow Runners? I have only run across one over many years. Maybe you just need to target the right zone.

Oilfish - Posing with Capt. Roddy Hayes

Man should not live by only eating swordfish.
