Want to start by thanking you all for the advice over the last couple of months. From rigging, tackle, draggaffing, etc. I really had everything in order when I needed it. I also learned that I WILL NOT GO SOLO AGAIN!!.
Started out last night alone and decided to put out 3 rods (2 tips and a balloon) Working on the first rod and get the balloon rod to depth and then start to blow up the balloon. Balloon gets away from me so I work on another. As I turn to attach it I see the line straight back with the rod jerking around. I look back and see my electralume shooting back and forth under the surface. Get tight and after 3-4 minutes the hook pulls. I finish the drift and then decide to head deeper where I initially hooked up. Get the 3 rods out and 30-35 minutes later the same rod starts to click, Harness up, get tight and feels like nothing special. Then it realizes it's hooked and goes down. To make a long story short I started at 10:55pm off of Dade and ended up in north Boca 4 hours and 15 minutes later. These fish are tremedious. I have never had anything even close to this. I literally hand cramps in every muscle, blisters etc and was unable to open and close my hands. The word torture comes to mind. I spent the entire time alone in harness and in rod holder (after 3hrs in harness) with 25# of drag on this fish. It is definitely not for the faint of heart. Gaffing and getting it to the boat was another story. Final tally 79 1/2". Again thanks for the info I never would have been able to do this without it. The no longer lone ranger! |

To get it in the boat I ended up having to put the 8 foot hard gaff into it through the hard eye/head area and stand with one foot on the gunnel and the other on the outboard to be able to get it into the gap between the outboard and gunnel. Wasn't fully enough room so I ended up lifting it in sections (head first then rear section) to slide it in by deadlifting it from above on the gunnel. Again a part of why I wouldn't do it alone again... DUKE
