Default First sword report

The crew and friends of the Canyon Runner was out for a fun fishing weekend, and we took the boat down to Miami on friday (from Palm Beach) to try our luck a fishing down there. Saturday we found ourselves fishing off Key largo in 140' going 7/9 on sails for the day. With the perfect conditions we pushed out and started our drift over 2 decent lumps off largo. Had sardines and mackeral THICK under the boat from 15'-150' deep....i didn't think it was gonna be long before we had a hit. At 9:00 the tip rod set at 150' started screaming and fish on! After a brisk run, the sword swam right at the boat were our mate in the summer Mike Zajac promptly gaffed a fat 57" fish...in the boat less than 10 minutes. We set the tip rod right in the middle of the schools of mackeral we were marking, the sardines were holding closer to the surface...and that what the sword ate...a live mackeral with a green LP. We gave it another 45 minutes and pulled the lines in to call it a AWSOME day. 1 hit, 1 sword and 7/9 on sails.

We have a place in Key Largo but have never swordfished down there. Do you fish the same methods and depths as Miami/Ft. Lauderdale? Are there charts for that area?

Yes, there are charts for the area...yes, same techniques....
If you find a chart, I will get the band and number next time i go to the boat if you want it, look at the Ocean Reef area off key Largo. Go almost straight out to 1200' and you will see two nice lumps, and if you continue up the line the structure looks like it gets even better. We normally are running out of Lake worth Inlet when we go swording and usually start at the north end of the hillsboro hills, or sometimes right off palm beach. But the swording off palm beach is generally better in 1500-1800'. Most of the time when we are fishing south of palm beach we are in 1000-1400'.
here is a pic...
