Broadbill 10/25- 1 fat one and 1/1 mystery fish

We headed out late and picked a couple tuna on the way out. Made our first drop around 1. Second drop bring in this fish. We didn't even know he was hooked the drag just slipped a little on the way up, had a cool looking eyeball and some sharp scales. Looks like an escolar from other pics but im not sure.

Third drop goes by and after about 30 mins I re drop and after 5 minutes we get hit and come tight . Fish hugged the bottom for a bit and then came straight up then back down to 1000 ft, after two more runs and an hour and half and I stick him with the poon, game over. Fish was all tangled up 20ft down from the splice with no hook in him. Took the three of us to get him in and we headed straight for the barn. He was 83" long and 55" thick and im thinkin close to around 350lb . I have a good picture of the fish coming out of the boat but it's in bmp format and im havin trouble trying to post it if someone could help out.

Nice fishes!

If you open your .bmp with "paint" and do a "file: Save as" you can select jpg as the format...should be able to upload no prob.

Nice swordy... and a nice Jupiter too.

Your mystery fish is 100% OILFISH. The rough scales are the most distinguishing feature when compared to an escolar, which is smooth like a kingfish.

Here's a side-by-side comparison...

Oilfish scales are raised and very rough, like a cheese grater or wood rasp.

Escolar have smooth skin, similar to a kingfish, but usually a dark silver or gray. Actually, they look like a cross between a kingfish and a tuna.

I've never caught one or seen one that big...but using the formula (L*G*G)/800 = 313...some guys use 700 so 358. Great catch. 350 seems like a very reasonable estimate.

Congrats.

I have not tried it myself. I've heard it's similar to, but not as good, as escolar. But both offer the risk of gasterointestinal issues if ya eat too much. I think 4oz is the recommended limit per day to avoid any problems. (about the size of a can of tuna.)

I was also wondering if Oil Fish was good eating, so I looked it up and found this --
The oilfish, (Ruvettus pretiosus), is a snake mackerel, the only species in the genus Ruvettus. It is found in the Mediterranean, middle Atlantic and throughout the southern seas, at depths of between 100 and 800 m. Its length is between 80 cm and 2 m.

Coloration is dark purple-brown on the back with a pale belly, and the pupil of the eye is brightly phosphorescent.

The flesh is very oily and although edible, the oil actually consists of wax esters, which are not digested like traditional oil. The flesh has an oil content of around 25%, and with serving sizes of several ounces and upwards commonplace, some people experience a laxative side effect from such a large amount of wax esters.

Olfish is pleasantly rich in taste and can be substantially cheaper than some other fish species, leading to some fish sellers to intentionally mislabel it as butterfish or even codfish despite the utter lack of relation. This leads the consumer to often eat large servings, as they assume it is a fish they are familiar with, and then some may experience a laxative effect. Because of this, Japan and Italy have imposed an import ban on oilfish and Australia has banned oilfish from being sold as food. The US FDA has warned consumers about potential mislabeling of oilfish, but has concluded that any laxative side effects that occur are at worst, uncomfortable, but pose no health risk.

Nice going man.
That one looks like and oilfish from those pics. Too bad, escolar are very good eating IMO. They sell them as "white tuna" a the sushi joints.

Yeah if you cut your foot on the fish than its an oilfish.Escolar is very smooth like a kingfish,so you would'nt cut your foot if it was a escolar. Careful, if you drop it on the deck of that nice Jupiter it will stick to the deck. Nice fat daytime sword. Yeah even escolar has the wax esters but they are good eating. I've heard that you should limit the portion size of escolar to 5-6 ounces

A laxative reaction to oilfish is putting it nicely. A friend of mine, one of those I'll eat anything types, went there; and by "went there" I mean the crapper for a very long time.

Stick to those nice pumpkin steaks!
