Went out on Friday night. NOAA was actually right - it did lay down in the afternoon. Not much current, though. Set up a drift after running down about 15 clicks southeast of Fowey. Started dragging 2 squid and 2 dead macks and one livie up top. Got hit around 9:15 p.m. Felt the sword batting the line and after about a half an hour it came unglued. Don't know if its just me - but I bought these pre-inked squid from River Marine and thought I'd give them a try. The hook is a huge circle hook. I HATE CIRCLE HOOKS AND HAVE NOT CAUGHT A SINGLE SWORD ON ONE OUT OF CATCHING 14 on J's....alright maybe I'm just overreacting, but it was my first shot outthere in a while. I should have never put that squid out. Anyhow it was a gorgeous night
- just wanted to give a shout out. O'h and no other bite and we came in around 1:00 a.m. Forgot to say, there sure were alot of ICE (Homeland Security) at the dock looking for Migrants or whatever. Checked my ID & Registration.

Captain that's funny because that night I went out and I went 2 for 3 it was on those baits and the circle hook work just fine. Never had a problem with circle hooks just maybe some people just don't know how fish circle hooks.. To be honest with you till this day those are the best baits that I've seen rigged. The other funny thing is how the one that you put colored was the one that got hit so there must be something good about them.. I guess it was just a bad night for you it happens... Better luck next time!

Well..... It COULD HAVE BEEN RED,BLUE,PURPLE,NEON,GREEN, AND PINK, BUT WHO CARES? THEY ARE ALL RIGGED ON CIRCLE HOOKS.
Tight Lines! DL ![]() Oh by the way captain is this the circle hook you couldn't catch your sword on. Well this one didn't make it back alive to the ocean thanks to that bad circle hook. Last edited by Disco Lady : 05-13-2008 at 02:38 PM. |

I thought most preferred J's to the circles. I see here that some like 'em. U'h thanks for your pic, but the Circle hooks on these pre-rigged squids seem bigger and fatter than that one in your pic (I'd say double) - Nice job on that one though...
U'h, it was a Blue squid and as for the technique, I guess fishing with a circle hook means you don't have to set the hook - unless I'm missing something???? Also, I Never tried to set the hook - I let him run back and forth. Also, I guess because their mouths are so soft, you don't want to set the drag very much above like 18 lbs, unless the fight has been going on a while..... A while ago, I heard of a study conducted by Aftco that says for every 250 yards of line that's out, it doubles the dragset on the fish. So, the drag was untouched during the fight. Thanks for all of the comments - I'm just frustrated. |

12/0 offset J hook & 25+#'s of drag
Test the drag on your reels with 100'+ of line out, I think you might be surprised at how little pressure there actually is, even at 25#'s . . . .

I prefer J hooks. Think about how many nights the fish just bat the baits around and end up getting snaged with J's. A circle won't hook those fish.
