Default Capt. Rob from Team Fintastic nails 490-pounder

Just a quick word of congrats to my bro-in-law Capt. Rob and his entire family (the wife and three kids) for catching a slob Friday night just shy of 500 lbs. What an experience for the kids, ages 4, 5, and 9, to get the chance to go out and swordfish on a calm night, and it was a fluke because his charter cancelled.

He caught the sow on a Shimano 50W and a custom bent butt which was his tip rod set down at 150' with a squid. The fish had a whopping 97" LJF and had a 66" girth. Fight time was 3 hours and 35 minutes. He and his wife took turns.

Wish I was there. Don't know the crew but thanks to the fellas on the Contender who pulled up to help him bring the fish onboard.

And it was a pumpkin.

Laters.

Juan

Nice fish . They passed us on the ICW just south of Hillsboro - tail sticking out one side of the boat and bill out the other. We got skunked

The Contender was "Reel Fast" out of Boca. (a friend of Marauder1) We heard the chatter on the VHF while we were drifting.

Was that 490lbs weighed or calculated?

Weight was calculated. However, I just double checked Rob's math and he screwed up somewhere. I had not crunched the numbers assuming they were right. That fish should be 528 lbs. based on the formula:

girth squared X length/800

Whatever, he should have gone into LP and weighed it. He keeps the boat west of Federal/Lake Santa Barbara and I think was just trying to get in. The kids were passed out.

And yes, crappy photos. There are others that I am sure will be posted. I am big on getting photos when the fish are boated to capture color and the moment.

Very nice, hope the kids are old enough to remember that day when they grow up. Congrats.

Speaking of birth, Rob felt badly. The fish was deep hooked, threw up its stomach toward the end of the fight and came up pretty much dead next to the boat. No chance of reviving it. It was loaded with roe. He spoke to his kids about the importance of the big ones. He had released a 46-incher earlier in the night. He never imagined this fish was that big.

I am not complaining as I am eating pumpkin pie watching the super bowl. Go G-Men!!
