Default Deep dropping

I went deep dropping for swords with a couple of UM professors,
Harry and Bill, and my friend Cyndi saturday morning out of Haulover
on Harry's fishing machine. We fished 4 short drifts of a few miles each
and did not got a bite. We caught one of the seamounts and lost a rig; we
thought we just offshore of it and when we realized we weren't the depth
rose by 200' a few feet faster than we could get the rig up. We were
fishing with a "homemade" hydraulic reel loaded with stainless wire and a mono top shot. We used about 12 lbs of lead and a custom-made L bracket
instead of a coat hanger. Unfortunately the L bracket we lost
was the one he was going to give to me. I'm going to have to wait
for the next one. Bill is a really good capt and he has hovered ocean
instruments right over the bottom in 3 miles of water so he kept
Harry's Boat right over the rig and we were near the bottom most of
the time. Our squid were never nibbled. Not even one of the tentacles
was eaten by something else. We also had a flat line out and one line
at around 100' for dolphin or whatever and nada. After having an unbelievable year, I am now on a 0 for 5 slump for swords (but usually
a few dolphin a trip). that's fishing. At least the last fish had a PSAT put
into it and it should be popping up this weekend!!
cheers, arthur

How strong of a current were you in?

We fished in 5.9 mph this past weekend.

Check your PM's.

was deep dropping on SUNDAY had a current of 4.9 at it`s strongest with a south wind ...had to keep the boat moving south almost at trolling speed to keep the line strait down at 900+ ft , total 28 rosies to 2 LBS one small tile ... and on first drop some thing large ,had it on for 10 min till it got off the hook ...

We were out in the river a few miles from Relentless Saturday. FAST current. Made a few drops in the 1700' range without a sniff. Figured maybe the swords were crowding behind hills to avoid the current, so we dropped gear behind my barrelfish humps. Guess what we brought up on the sword rig? Hint: It didn't have a bill.

Also, we trolled out from Boca to the grounds without a single knockdown, and also fished some live pilchards on the reef in the afternoon. Nothing. It was just a poor bite for everything that day.

R33, part of that drift speed is due to windage. We were drifting at
4 knots+ when we weren't motoring on spot. cheers, arthur

With both motors in gear at 1000 rpm, we were still going north at 3.4.
