Hello Gent's,
We have until June 20th at 5:00 PM to get in our last appeals to KEEP THIS ZONE CLOSED!! I attached one of the e.mails I sent this morning in hopes that it will spur some extra "troops" to do the same. Get on those keyboards and kick some ass!! E.Mail address info and "Subject Line" entry: SF1.030107C@NOAA.gov and "I.D. 030107C" To Whom It May Concern, It is with great alarm and some level of anger that I hear about the latest attempt by the Commercial Longline Fishing industry to penetrate the Closed East Coast Florida Zone. Under the silly guise of "Research" (please...let's not be naive) they seek to get permission for a small number of L-L vessels to begin fishing for a limited time to assess the condition of the fishery. With all due respect, this is nothing more than a plan to establish a toe-hold back in this fishery with the hopes of "prying the door all the way open" with future legislation. The L-L fishing community has a hard life, this I concede, however, the record shows that in virtually every fishery that they operate in around the globe the end result is a decimated biomass of both targeted and non-targeted species. Unfortunately, when the killing is good they just keep killing... A decade ago the Long Liners were expelled from the Gulfstream adjacent to Florida for a REASON. Regrettably, they were accomplishing the very thing they are good at...killing too much and in an indiscriminate manner. This process, in it's thinly-veiled and premeditated tiny beginnings, can NOT be permitted to have another chance to strip the life out of this magnificent coastal and offshore recreational fishery. They already have access to this "River of Life", the Gulfstream, further downstream along the coast of the U.S. and in the area of the Gorges Banks off Canada. The results are the same and predictable in these other fisheries...terribly depleted Pelagic Fish Populations and a huge bias of small fish. We in the resource RESPECTING Sportfishing community implore you to not permit ANY, ANY, ANY Longline Fishing in this PROTECTED ZONE as it would just be "the beginning of the end". Very Sincerely, Stephen F. Delany Palm City, FL
