FWC seeks public views on future of saltwater fishing

Florida is the “Fishing Capital of the World.”

And, an important process is under way to help ensure that this is true for many years to come.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has scheduled a series of public workshops and a statewide video conference to hear what people think about the future of saltwater fishing in Florida.

The FWC has been working with a group of stakeholders who represent commercial and recreational fishing, research and environmental interests to develop a draft vision document regarding the future management and protection of Florida’s marine fisheries resources.

The Commission now is asking the public to comment on this document, which includes a vision statement and five focus areas relating to marine habitat enhancement and protection, ecosystem management, research coordination, interagency coordination, and funding and staffing needs. The document is available online at MyFWC.com/marine/workgroups/futureoffishinginfl.html.

Everyone is encouraged to participate at the workshops, which will take place from 6-8 p.m. local time as follows:

Wednesday, Feb. 21
Broward County Commission Chambers
115 S. Andrews Ave.
Rm. 422
Ft. Lauderdale

Thursday, Feb. 22
Marathon Government Center
2798 Overseas Highway
Marathon

Also, residents are invited to participate at a statewide video conference at one of several FWC offices from 3 to 5 p.m. (EST) Tuesday, Feb. 27 (2-4 p.m. CST in Panama City) at the following locations:

FWC South Regional Office
8535 Northlake Blvd.
West Palm Beach

Contact Lee Schlesinger at (850) 487-0554 for information regarding the upcoming workshops and video conference.

Anyone requiring special accommodations to participate in the workshops or video conference should advise the agency at least five calendar days before the event by contacting Cindy Hoffman at (850) 488-6411. If you are hearing or speech impaired, please contact the agency using the Florida Relay Service at (800) 955-8771 (TTY) or (800) 955-8770 (voice).
