Was thinking about it. Is there a program (ex: Billfish Foundation tagging Sailfish.) for tagging Swordfish? Can you use the same tags you get in the tackle shop or are there specific tags for Swords only? We catch a lot of pups  and I think we could do some tagging. Thanks.

Use the Billfish Foundation tags. If you look at the card with each tag there is a check box for swordfish. Just fill out the length, date, where it was caught, etc. and send it in. They will enter it into their data base, which soon you will be able to access on line.
p.s. The tags you get from the Billfish Foundation can be used on all billfish. www.billfish.org |

We have the NOAA-NMFS tags that have a single hole for the sharp point from the tag stick to be insterted in, our tag stick has a threaded piece that has a slot in the middle of it but will not work properly with the NMFS tags...Where can I retrieve the correct, threaded fitting for the tag stick that will work with the NOAA-NMFS tags?

in about 360 days from now, We will be able to see what one keys caught swordy has been up to. We placed a satellite tag in one that was about 120lbs hooked well in the corner of the mouth and was brought to boatside for the tag in 10 min. Fish was very healthy on the release. The fish was one of a double that was hooked. The first fish was hooked to deep for the tag.

JS SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE AN OLD AFTCO TAG STICK . You can get a new tip that will work with either the nmfs or billfish foundation tags at any tackle shop. It does'nt have the slot just a pointed tip.

If you want to try to make your own tagging pole, yes, it's not that hard to build your own. The heads themselves are available through The Billfish Foundation for (I think) $7 each. It's not that hard to make.
The other option is to just take an old broomhandle, drill a hole in the end for the metal applicator tip, and then wrap the other end a couple of times with friction tape to give you a good grip. Good luck! |
