Is it going to get worse? Unfortunately, yes would be my guess. In my experiences I have seen this scenario all too often. There are some who fish our oceans who believe that because they make their living fishing that they have more rights to the fish than those who fish for sport. I have witnessed this and have been involved in 2 altercations with "big boat" charter captains who feel this way. I was told once and I quote verbatim,"Get off my ocean!"

I personally don't have any problems with the gear guys. But it is nice knowing where they're located so as not to interfere with the gear, or cause damage to our boat. |

I personally don't have a problem with them either as long as they have a permit to use them and are doing so within their guidelines. I was just merely mentioning what I saw. And, no, I was not confusing them with land based beacons - they were definitely fishing buoys

I dont believe all the bouys belong to the licensed commercial guys! Ther are meat hungry "rec" guys fishing that gear as well.
For that reason I think Ill pass on the upcoming sword tournaments. Its a shame but it looks like polygraphing may be necessary now!Hopefully this may come to an end in January, if it can be policed.

the chatter was about a string that was between the 26.01 and the 26.04 and the 48.5 line last night, around 10:30pm. We were inside that and it only appeared to be about 1/2 dozen buoys, one boat idling back and forth along the set with proper nav lights well lit.

Most of the commercial guys I know of setting gear are only setting a small amount of gear. It's easier to work and less likely to get messed with if they are on top of it.
I do know one guy that lost half his set when a storm popped up off of Key West. It's hard to find a bouy in 12ft seas and 50mph winds. I know, I know... why was he out there at all??? He lost I think 15+ rigs and he's the only one I know of setting more than 20 bouys at a time. |

Holy Crap!! 60!!!??? Are you sure?? I only have 10 and I think that a limit of 35 is utterly ridiculous. Another example of fisheries management at its finest. It should be limited only to what can be kept in visual range and that would be about 4 miles or so. So if you spread the set out to one every quarter mile that would be around 16 bouys. I fish off a 28 foot cat and I wouldn't even have the room to have that many on board!!

just to be safe... I'll be on the other side of the room. Like Ollie says... It's better to be careful 100 times than be killed once.

I personally know of only 3 boats that have the permits and fish the gear out here....Dade/Broward. That would be me, Frequent Flyer, and one other person. I know of a few other people that also have permits and do not fish gear. If other people recently purchased permits and are fishing the gear that would be news to me. If rec guys are meat hungry enough to fish it....then so be it if its legal for them to do so at the present time.
One other note is that between the three of us..... I have only seen the other peoples gear out there on a barely a handful of occasions. I am the only one of the permit holders that is 100% commercial and fishing/diving is my sole source of income. I kind of have a problem with this and am of the opinion that you are either a full time fisherman and at least 75% of your income should be derived from such in order to have any permits at all. My only purpose for coming on this forum was to at least make an attempt to let everyone out there know what they are seeing and give a general description of what it takes and how its fished. Having heard some of the chatter on the radio about it I figured it was the best way to let everyone know exactly what was going on out there and I've always been more than happy to answer anyones questions.

One last thing before I get ready to depart.....
IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL THAT AN ORDERLY SANE DECORUM BE MAINTAINED AT THIS MEETING!!!! I have been to plenty of them and let me tell you the surest way to screw yourself is to fly off the handle.
