Of course I was kidding Ollie, anyone would have to be crazy to think it is not a lot of work and the fact that you have been doing this for 20 years, you've got cajones dude. BTW how many buoys do you place at the same time? is there one bait per buoy?

QQ,

If you check the draft plan of the new Fisheries Management Plan which is the first document to actually define bouy gear, you will find a drawing with the legal arrangement of bouys and hooks.

No handline ( which will soon be required to be attached to the boat) or any of the newly defined bouy gear can have more than two hooks attached at any time. In fact with the literal interpretation of the law, you can't have more than two hooks on rod and reel either.

And yes, bouys can be attached together,,,,, its called a longline!

Seriously, If your check the regs on NMFS site. you will find that they definitely cannot be attached under current regs or new regs which are scheudled to go into effect on Jan 1, 2007.

Shortly after that time, it can be expected that a 30 public notice will be posted which will make recreational use of bouy gear illegal at the end of that 30 day period.

How many I set all depends on how wrong the forecast seems to be when I get out there. If its less than 3 feet (long period) I may put out 10 and that would be all I have room to carry anyway. Any rougher than that and I'll only put out 8. This is also the case if I don't have my regular crew on board. Which only thankfully happens on rare occasions. Remember you have to run the line every 15-20 minutes, maybe sooner if you see the gear getting out of line, which means you got one on. Your ass beating then is not just limited to the run to and from the grounds. Rather its an on going process. If you set the gear right it should be spaced at least a quarter mile apart. So an 8 bouy set covers 2 miles of water. Its not like going out with the rods and kicking back and relaxing for a couple hours once you get them out. Its an all night hustle. IF the bite happens to be on it can get utterly ridiculous sometimes and it can be hard just to keep up. :eye:

After the ass beating you keep telling us about, how does it feel when you sell the cores? No sympathy here.

I know Ollie and respect his views. He provides a lot of information here when he doens't have to. He makes a living at commercial fishing. He doesn't live in a million dollar house... he simply makes a living busting his ass. The same as any blue collar hard working american.

I really don't think Ollie is looking for sympathy. He is just providing the facts IMO.

Okay BEAST I wasn't even hinting at wanting sympathy.

I was answering a previous question.

I realize that you have anti commercial fishing views, but fishing for a living is one of the oldest proffessions in the world and its not going to go away any time soon. Even though I fish for a living and have to show some support for others that do, I have serious issues with many types of gear used and how the fisheries are managed. Highly destructive over efficient gear that kills indiscrimanently has got to go. Fisheries management and decision makers that wait to take action after damage has been done have got to go as well. I hate to see people lose jobs over it but if thats what it takes to ensure the long term health of fish stocks then so be it. MOST OF THE PROBLEMS IN FISHERIES WOULDN'T EXIST IF THE RIGHT DECISIONS HAD BEEN MADE FROM THE START.

OH and by the way I do feel pretty damn good when I sell the cores. I know I worked my ass off to make every cent............ AND WHATS MORE I FEEL EVEN BETTER ABOUT IT BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT I DIDN'T HAVE TO KILL TONS AND TONS OF OTHER SEALIFE TO DO IT EITHER!!!

I would like to say a sincere thanks to those of you that have backed me up and shown support. :thumright:

So is prostitution! I am not totally anti-commercial. I recognize the need to feed the public. I have a friend who is rod/reel commercial. I am more anti-BIG commercial. But if you want I will proudly wear the anti-commercial label. I have no problem with that.

Captain Ollie, I wasn't putting you into the same framework as the other commercial fisherman. Matter of fact I have no big problem with the laws allowing your type of commercial fishing or the rod/reel type my friend does. Your type of gear and the frequency of your checks is highly unlikely to put a dent in the fishery. It also is highly unlikely that you would be killing non-target species. I would go so far as to say, that your type of fishing is eco-acceptable. If all the commercial guys felt as you do we wouldn't be debating or labeling anti vs. pro. Am I not right?

Exactly! That was my point!!!! That is why there is no sympathy here. Your hard work is no more heroic than the laborer swinging a pick or shovel all day in the heat. Some may feel that way, not me. I only held 2 people in high esteem and that was my Mom and Dad, everyone else puts their pants on the same way I do, one leg at a time. I am truly sorry, if that hurts your feelings or those who back and support you.

Hey Jim.. now you hit the nail on the head. Ollie's real name is Olivia and she/he was a prositute prior to commercial fishing. He/She figureed if I'm always going to feel slimmy and smell like old dirty fisherman... I might as well become one. After the sex change, he/she still smells the same, aquired a few more earrings and tattoo's and still sells "plugs" for a living. Hell, the business cards didn't have to change either so it was a smooth transition

Don't know for sure, I heard that too. I don't know how many guys do it and what they are allowed to use, but last night around midnight around 26.12, the horizon was blinking so much it looked like an airport landing strip.
