Default bouy gear

Cruising through the threads here, I've seen commercial "bouy gear" mentioned a few times. I'm familiar with handlines, as I fish for tuna in NE and some guys use handlines for BFT (although most all of the handliners have switched over to rod/reel) - but I'm guessing these are some sort of free floating handlines.

Could someone give me a quick rundown on how these are rigged/used?

Thanks.

Just got a good pm from a member of the board and I thought I should clarify my post. I wasn't looking for a how-to on commercial swordfishing- I had just never heard of this type of fishing and was curious as to what it was.

Merry Christmas.

Thumbs down Don't ban the bouys

Grasshopper, nothing is ever as simple as banning . The bouy gear is the least offensive way to harvest swordfish. Minimal bycatch, and relatively quick release of pups . Have met and fished w/ a few of the bouy guys in our area. They are respectful of the rec guys, and help w/ the quota, without decimating the stocks. We are experiencing the best swordfishing in my lifetime right now, and the bouys are fishing right along side of us . So where's the foul?
DF2

ps: TD since your workin w/ Santa for the holiday, could you put in a good word for me about those alutec's I asked for.
Thanks,
Butch

let the comm. guys fish the bouys outside the closed zone.

the zone was closed for a reason.

all of the tagging data that i have seen seems to indicate that these HIGHLY migratory fish arent as HIGHLY migratory as once thought.

if the stocks of the east coast dont travel worldwide as once thought, but stay here throughout they're lifespan, what do we need ICAAT for?

let the japs, spanish and whoever else decimate they're own stocks - we'll keep the stocks here healthy by banning LLs altogether, and allowing only comm. and rec. catches that are reasonable.

go to 50" minimum? sure - why not?

go to 1 man - 1 fish up to 3 boat limit for ALL sword catches rec. AND comm.? why not?

with limits like those, how long do you think it would take for us to be battling the granders out on the 50 again?

Any one with an IQ over 50 can tell you are nothing but an azzhole that is why your responses have been limited. So I will drop my IQ down to your level and reply. You have no idea what you are talking about because they have tagged fish that travel thousands of miles. They have proved Blue fin tuna cross the Atlantic for crying out loud.It is my opinion that all your girlfriends or maybe boyfriends have left you for Commercial fisherman because once again all you want to do is bash commercial guys.So go get a life take up knitting and take you and your other screen names with you.So 10 swords in 2 or 3 years of tying makes you an expert. That must be it if we ban all commercial fishing maybe then even you might be able to catch a fish. Happy New Year and I hope it brings you much peace and a new hobby.
