I can agree with you on this, but that is the internet. There are many inaccurate statements posted in this and probably every forum on the internet.

Vinnie,
Public access as you stated, does not necessarily include commercial sale of. There are also many species of saltwater/freshwater fish and inland game that are protected from ALL hunters and fishermen, sport and commercial. I don't know why you feel that Fish and Wildlife couldn't exempt Swordfish from commercial catch and sale within the US EEZ entirely. Since Fishalways brought up those species, all of which are restricted to sport use only; I thought I would show you that your opinion of countability has nothing to do with not allowing commercial access. Impressive numbers yet still illegal to commercial harvest! Whitetail Deer Commercial exploitation, unregulated hunting and poor land-use practices, including deforestation severely depressed deer populations in much of their range. For example, by about 1930, the U.S. population was thought to number about 300,000. After an outcry by hunters and other conservation ecologists, commercial exploitation of deer became illegal and conservation programs along with regulated hunting were introduced. Recent estimates put the deer population in the United States at around 30 million. Conservation practices have proved so successful that, in parts of their range, the white-tailed deer populations currently far exceed their carrying capacity and the animal may be considered a nuisance. Here's a thought! Next time your in Washington DC, why don't you walk over to the US Fish & Wildlife office and tell them that the Whitetail count is well over 100% MSY. Tell them you want fair and equal access... you dusted off your .270 and you want a directed whitetail permit or you will suit !!!! Quote:

I held the globe like you mentioned and still have no idea why you would be talking about swordfish numbers "globally". I thought we were debating the western N. Atlantic, and specifically the FEC. Nice twist! I can answer your second comment very easily. "you have a 30" waist"... definitely NOT TRUE. "More manhood than The Beast" VERY TRUE. It isn't hard to notice that you are a BIG D**K !!!!

Ok This is not about you, But more of public awareness So I have been told, I cannot find anything about it my self. There is a coalition started to petition NMFS in the next session to ban Electric reels for RECS. Some big names like CONTENDER BOATS and others . My point is to make sure that people know that when and if it happens they will be shooting the REC guy in the foot once again while the COMMERICAL will still be allowed, an example is buoys, REC guys could have fished bouys if they wanted, then they were taken away. I know you believe they cant use electrics, but the way it looks to me is they can and DO. I say whats good for the goose is good for the gander, If they do take it away, take it away for BOTH. ![]() ![]() I couldn't copy and paste it, So I had to snap a pic which sucks, but you can see the Xs in the boxes.

Two points to make:
1. It is highly unlikely that NMFS will entertain a proposal to limit the use of electric reels. Heck, we can't even get them to require circle hook on buoys, much less restict reel type! 2. The arguments herein regarding biomass, health of the stock, etc, ignore one important issue, and thats relative abundance. We have had periods of time in the past (late 70's early 80's) where the biomass was at 1.0 or greater and we couldn't catch any fish off our coast. We manage our HMS as that , Highly Migratory. This means that if a particular area is overfished, no managment measures are taken unless the entire stock is overfished. We ignore the fact that many HMS spend a lengthy period of time in the same area, for instance, juvenile swords may spend as much as 2 years of their life in our local waters. But, we don't look at managment measures that will acually protect HMS at certain periods of their life stage. IF.... and thats a big if,,, we are a nursery area for juvenile swordfish, maybe we should have specific managment measures to protect this life stage, like different size limits, maybe slot limits, maybe circle hooks, etc. But, we don't do that in managing HMS..... For PLL's it doesn't really matter since they are presumable much more mobile and can move with the fish. Recs, we're stuck where we live. |

One more thing,
When electrics were first used out here, I spent about an hour on the phone with Greg Faircloth going thru the regs on electrics and bandit gear. Unquestionably, commercials can use bandit gear, electric reels for swordfish. |

So I have been told, again I have not been able to find any info on it myself,
Contender Boats, Viking, Bass Pro Shops are a few of the big names on the petition, and The Billfish Foundation. I just hope that if they are, they gather all the facts before they put thier name on it, It sure would suck to see a REC shoot off another REC's foot off while the COMM. is laughing all the way out to the 50 line.
