What a beast.
Nice shot too . Imagine missing, and that fish turning on ya and running that bill through your gut . Don't think too many people will be attempting this feat. Like to see somebody shoot a swordy on tape. That would be pretty interesting .

Am I the only guy that thinks he should not have shot it.I have killed lots of Marlin and should not be hypocritical. But I don't know I might have shot it as well. But I would give big kudos to the guy with the Ball's to jump in at night and shot a sword.

I agree with you on the swordfish though. It would have come strait back at him and done a Zorro on his ass. Then a Jason Taylor to finish him off. |

Eric,
I thought the same thing, but then thought about the hypocrisy when I've killed billfish too. I don't think anyone should make a habit of it, not that I think you could. Its an impressive feat, and the fish was eaten. Hopefully his hunger for spearing large marlin is quenched. Don't think anyone really has a quantitative handle on Marlin populations, although most would agree the numbers have diminished .I say congratulations, and great shot . Just hope Marlin spearfishing doesn't become trendy. If it does someone will assuredly get gored.

What a shame.Sportfisherman receive too much negative publicity about killing billfish and now this guy kills a beautiful female marlin because he could! Not to eat,not for any reason other than he could.Panama fisherman already face challenges from the Gov. closing areas to fisherman and stupid killings of marlin will only hurt us...why not spear a whale or dolphin next...this guy gets the dumb shit of the year award, not any praise.

They call this guy a conservationist on the video. That doesn't seem to be very true. A conservationist would have taken video of the marlin and not shot it.

I've been mulling this over in my head since it was posted, and I have to say I would be a hypocrite if I said I wouldn't have taken the shot.
I don't think anyone in here would think twice about keeping any billfish that was a potential world record. It appears he knew for certain that this would be a record fish. Can you really fault him for somthing I think most of us would do if it was caught on rod and reel? I know I don't really see alot of sport in spearfishing but some people do I guess. Just my 2c.

" This conservationist" hahahahha what a joke. I can say that the video footage of the blue feeding on those little fish. I can say i have never killed a healthy billfish, so I would not shoot it. Besides spear guns are for girls, hawiian slings are for real men.

I love spearfishing...don't think I would have taken the shot. I had a bad view of the video, but it didn't look like he had to shoot it. Just my opinion I guess.

Rob's record was first of all denied and with good reason. He fought the fish from the boat wich is illegal. The so called record has already fallen to a Brazillin who shot a fish over 6oolbs. As far as Rob , I was in pinas at the time and have to say there is no bigger asshole on the planet, and that goes for the whole t.v. crew that was with him. COCKY ****S! who know alot less than they think they do.quote that!!!!!!

I quote Andy.....
Good post. This guy is a total jackass. Strange how some of you seem supportive and you would've done the same. There was no need to kill that fish. Last edited by Sword Donkey; 03-28-2007 at 03:24 PM.. |

of course a spearfisher should not be called a conserving guy, that's like hunting with a rifle, there's no way for a save release of what ever you hunt.
but that's part of this sport. he did no illegal action killing that fish, so we should respect a "Fishing" guy's decision to keep a possible world record, it doesn't matter you know and don't like the person. i am myself a offshore fishermen, most time of the year for billfish and i release them, but be sure the day i have my first possible grander on the hook i will do anything to get him to the weight station, it would be the first grander for our whole area, and i would do it only with the first one. i don't like the sport of spearfishing because i think it is unneccessary to hunt fishes with a weapon which doesn't give the possibility to release him, but i respect the post of someone who loves that kind of legal sport and posts his report here on a swordfishing forum without calling him names like mentioned in some answers above. tight lines and handle spearfishers like we handle longliners here Mike |

So what is so great about killing somthing for the sake of killing? I thought that people where getting more enlightened than this fricken caveman. Maybe we put him on an open feild and shoot his ass just for the "sport" of it. He talks about telling his kids about senslessly killing this creature, i would be ashamed to tell my kids i did somthing so base.

I don't know what the poundage of the marlin the brazilian shot but since this guy hoped in a boat and took a ride his fish is half the size of a similar caught fish. Scroll to the last story IBSRC blue marlin record, spearfishing

Spearing marlin is very controversial even within the freediving community. Even those who say they would spear one acknowledge that it isnt going to be popular in the sportfishing community. Recently Id guess that half the veteran spearos I know said they would not shoot one given the chance. Personally I would not but it is a choice each diver makes on his own.
