Yesterday myself and Mark DeCabia had the pleasure to take Patrick from Power & Motoryacht magazine and his friend Chip out for a full fishing event here in South Florida. The day started off a little shakey trying to catch bait. The cold front pushed through saturday night coupled with the full moon made catching bait in the morning near impossible. We finally put enough bait in the boat and started fishing right off fowey. In the first hour we had 4-5 sails come through our spread, got a hook in three and an official release on one. Unfortunately, besides a few king bites, that was all the action we had for the afternoon.
As evening was approaching the NNW wind was subsiding so we decided to get in a sword trip as well. Within an hour of setting up we had something eat the close float that proceeded to DUMP our 70VSW in less than 3 minutes. This fish headed straight for the bottom than ran along the bottom which chaffed us off. We set back up again and within an hour we were hooked up again. We hooked Patrick up in the harness and he did an excellent job on the fish getting him to the boat 45 minutes later. The fish measured out at 70" and length and girth formula put it at ~160lbs. Hopefully this trip sets the tone for a successful sword season down here!
