Default snook fishing tackle

I am new to fishing. I recently moved to Tampa from Illinois. I was an avid bowhunter, deer. Now in Fla., if I want to be outdoors, I need to fish. My Mathews bow will not do the trick. Can someone help this displaced bowhunter get tackled up to start some in-shore snook and redfish fishing???

There are plenty of deer here in florida but you might have to travel a little to get one. but anyway i do alot of flats fishing here on the east coast for reds and trout. for a reel i use okumas 30's & 40's, and shimano 3000's & 4000's (a pflueger will be my next reel). some people like to use smaller reels like 25's or 2500's but i like to have some extra line cause i fish in open areas. For my rods i have 2 diff rods right now, my favorite rod is a 7ft 6in 10lb-17lb Star rod. i like it more cause i can cast further with the extra 6in. my second rod is a 7ft star rod. for mono i use ande 10lb or 12lb and ocassionally 8lb for my main line. Some people like braided line(power pro, spider wire etc.) for snook because it is stong but very small in dia. so you can still fit the same amount of line as mono but it is a higher lb test thus alowing you to rip snook out from under docks mangroves and other structues that will cut your line. if you use braided line i would use a long leader cuz the braided stuff stick out like a sore thumb in the water. For redfish i barely ever use any leader but for snook i would use 20lb or 30lb florocarbon. Bait i use large and jumbo live shrimp and everyone know mullet work. on the west coast you should be able to find some pillchards or greenies which work awesome for snook. Artificals i use jerk baits, exudes, bass assassins, and gulps all work good. for color of the jerk baits i like chartrus, copper, baby bass, salt & pepper sparkle w. chartues tail. i also use top waters like, Hedon zara spook ,Hedon zara puppy, Rapala skitter walk(i prefer the smaller size), and mirror lure top dog.

if you have any other questions just ask maybe i can help.

Danny

it all depends on the snook area you are fishing. If you are beach fishing you don't really have to worry about structure unless there are rocks around. If you are around jetties beef up your tackle. You wont stop structure snook if you fish 10lb test. (well not impossible but not likely) Pier or bridge snook is a different deal. Longer rods are a must and heavier line. For live bait mullet, greenies, pilchards, gog's, pinfish, and shrimp. Arties jigs, soft plastics, plugs or other fake stuff. Hope this helps

there are tons of stuff snook will take, you could free line your shrimp in the mangroves, or use jigs...they take like anything, except worms

I have been fly fishing at night in the ICW under the lights and having luck throwing little flies. Florocarbon is a must I have learned!

well the snook is my favorite fish and here in florida on the east coast I mostly use a 12lbs - 20bls test line clear with live greenies and I have got 25lbs - 55bls snook for lures I go with the D.O.A. Shrimp or the D.O.A. Mullet. Reel I use a Browning Spinner.
