Blowing up a 50 tld?

So this passed January we went over to Grand Cay and one of the days we did a little wahooing. I have 4 of the new 50 tlds with a combination of briad and mono. While we were doing our 13 knot troll we ended up wit 2 fish a 28# and a 61#. Durring the strikes and on the other missed fish strikes i was slighly worried that the reels may blow up. Have any of you guys had that happened to you yet. Is it worth up grading?

By the way that was my first trip to Grand and it was great, for all you guys that were thinking of making the trip but never have been. We stayed at Sassy Casies for 100 bucks per night for the "big room" including dockage and no rats! Their docks wouldn't do so well for boats over 35 feet or inboards.

My buddy has been using them for years with no problems. He runs 65# Tufline XP and 80# mono. He's probably caught 50+ fish easy on those reels with a handful over 50#.

love grand.Best brown conch ceviche, 6 bucks a bowl. Was there fresh water? What was the price of fuel? Last I heard they were havin trouble w/ the desalination plant.

Their is about 4 feet at the dock, the dock is just a little small for a big boat. If your worried about the boat in your profile pic, there should be no problem. Sassys is at the west end of grand so if you have outboards you can trim them up and go trough the narrow cut which is 200 feet from their dock. If you had inboards you would have to go all the way around and pass rossies and club med. There was freash water at the dock and it was 25c per gallon, (standard for over there). Fuel was 5.10 but that was before there recent jump in oil. I would assume its around 5.50 now.

Yes, TLD 50's can and do blow up. Generally it happens at the reel seat when the black plastic (here come the screams of "composite!!") frame cracks under pressure. It happened to me on a rat blue marlin on 100# mono. We had plenty of heat on him, and the reel broke free of the rod. We were able to hand line the fish, dump a bunch of line onto the deck, and blood knot the line to another rod and land him. There are others on the board who have had this same thing happen. Shimano says that we overtightened the reel seat. Whatever. It can break. Tiagras won't, and you can abuse the hell out of a Tiagra. Lastly, you can actually hear the clicker on a Tiagra. TLD clickers are waaay too quiet.

Lot of pressure on the reel through the harness lugs can break them.

I spoke with Tracy Melton about this issue two years ago. His take- The new reel seats on the improved model is beefed up. The ones that broke in the past were from anglers pulling with their hand on the front of the reel for leverage instead of lifting straight up with the lugs.

I have fished 2 TLD 50ws with 130 braid for wahoo for about 15 yrs and have never had a problem and we fish with tight drags. For my money I would take the slim chance of the reel breaking to fish with reels that are lighter and wont scratch. If you are targeting Blue Marlin or big Tuna or Swordfishing fishing Id get Tiagras which have a better drag and more line capacity.

I have 6 of the older TLD. 50 LRS's, 2 with braid backing and monel top shot. I have high speed trolled for 10 yrs. with them and landed 2 wahoo over 100lbs, and an unknown amount between 50 and 80 lbs. They still work like they are brand new, If you take care of them, they will take care of you. anything can break given the right situation. For the money they are great!!!!!

I just recently caught a 250 blue marlin on a tld 25. It was the last fish it will ever see. But it held up during the hour and a half battle. But its shot out like a virgin on prom now.

I would rather fish a tld than a tiagra. I have lost fish on the Tiagras because the drag just falls down into freespool. and they are less expensive. My tlds have taken alot of abuse and landed some big fish.

This is a great link. TLD's are very good and economical but the reel question is are you taking the TLD or the Tiagra to the prom!

If your fisin all mono tiagra has the capacity, if your fishin braid Avets have the drag and are much lighter, avet raptor two speed has 60# drag verses the tiagra 80 which only has 38# drag. been using Tiagras for 10+ years no problems but very heavy and cumbersum out of the chair, just bought two Avets and have landed 70# tunas and 80# wahoos so far I'm very impressed with these reels. I run 380 yds of 130 hollowcore and a 100' of 100#mono top shot for stretch, plenty of line for the slobs. Braid is changing the type of reels we use. Boboe is right on about the tlds.
