Default 844 Pound 11 Foot Mako Shark Caught Off Florida Gulf Coast

Quote:
Adlee Bruner and five others headed out into the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday on a charter boat and came back with a record catch for the decades-old Destin Fishing Rodeo.

"It was tense," Bruner, 47, said about the fight to land the 11-foot shark with a mouthful of huge teeth. "I've fished for 40 years. I've never see one that big."

Bruner and his fishing buddies were on the 52-foot charter boat "Twilight" with Capt. Robert Hill, about 70 miles southwest of this Florida Panhandle beach city.

The fishermen first noticed the big mako because it kept eating grouper and scamp they had hooked.

"It was like Jaws," Hill said.

Hill hooked a two-foot fish on as bait and tossed it out. The shark eventually hit it.

After a fight which lasted more than an hour, the shark was gaffed and eventually gave up after its tail was roped.

The men could not get the big shark in the boat. They tied the shark to the stern with three ropes and made the four-hour trip back to land.

The shark was hoisted up at the rodeo before a big crowd. It tipped the scale at 844.4 pounds.

After it was gutted, the mako still weighed 638 pounds, breaking the tournament's previous shark division record by 338 pounds, the Northwest Florida Daily News reported.

Default That is a big shark.

That is a big shark. I wouldn't want to be spearfishing for grouper out in those parts on that day.

Do people actually eat tertiary predator fish that have grown that large?

If you guys want to be entertained by the misinformed people that are outraged by this catch check out the blog from the local paper where it was landed. You guys can rest assured that if I landed that beast in our local waters there would be Mako steaks for everyone that wanted it.

RT that fish is tasty. Had steaks from a 600+ lber last time I was in new york, and it was real tasty. I'm w/ weekendbender on this issue. Its tasty, and a fish of a lifetime. If I can't eat it, I don't target it. If its dinner it goes in the box.

I would not deny that it is tasty, but for those of us that eat fish 3x per week or more, I might be concerned not to eat too much of THAT fish too fast, like 3x per month would be my preference.

I would be curious to know what a lab test of a sample of that fish would reveal: how much methylmercury would be reported? But maybe it is high in selenium too, the other essential nutrient.

Please don't let this scare anyone: it is probably OK to eat but just limit the number of portions over time and don't offer to small children.

Exclamation grouper thief

the best part of the whole story for me was that the shark was poaching grouper and scamp off the lines, before they baited him up. Steal my grouper once shame on you, twice...... watch out for the hook beeeotch

I like the way you think DF2.

I would have loved to be the stickman on that one.

My personal best was 511lbs taken in Montauk. Just my dad & I out that day. We had to have our friend with a gin-pole assist in bringing it in.

An 844 must have been absolutely wild.

Congrats to the capt & crew
