Hello everyone,
i am going down to myrlte beach SC for vacation, and i was interested in catching some small sharks o nshore, and i have no experince. Now i have 30lb test on a heavy duty pole, and i dont want to catch anything bigger than a 5lb baby shark from the shore. Can i use octopus for bait? Also anyone have any reccommendations on what size hook i should use. I will be doing catch and release for the fun of it. Please let me know what you experts think!!! If octopus isint good for bait, what else should i use?Thank you, Buzzy4p

First of all you want heavier line than 30lb i recommend usign 65lb Power Pro. Braided line works the best on the surf. When the mono stretches n rubs against anything like a rock or soemthing it just breaks, i've seen it happen so many times. You don't want any stretch.
for your leaders you want to use a minimum of 480lb cable and you want them to be 6ft+ in length. Anything under and your taking a risk. Don't use single strand wire, it will just kink n break. I had that happen when a BT was goign nuts. I use squid to catch bait such as blue runners and jacks. I recommend using fresh fish, use frozen but it will keep the odds of a hook-up down, because of the ammonia that settles in the blood when the fish dies. When you catch bait kill it immediately unless your going to be live lining it to prevent the ammonia from enetring the blood. Sharks sense the ammonia and its a turn off. for you hooks, use circle hooks, j's just pop out and get straightened. I used to use J's and i was so pissed off when i lost all these sharks, but over the last few years i've been using circles and my catch rate has gone up like 90%. Don't fish for baby sharks, let them grow. Fish big or go home.

i fish at North Carolina Nags Head area and catch all kinds of small sharks of the piers as well as surf...you cant always set a size limit to sharks jus to 5 lbs...you really dont know..alot of time i jus ues a bottom rig with sum good fresh cut bait and u can catch small sharks about 3lbs...but the bigger the shark the more fun...i watch people catch 10-30lb sharks off the end of the pier with live bait (blues/mullet). also for surf...you can buy a Drum Rig...basicly a heavy enough sinker to stay bottom and an 8/0 hook about 3 inchhs from sinker with cut bait
good luck -JT |

Here's a picture of my rig:
![]() Instead of 4ft of 250lb cable, change that to 5 feet of 480lb cable. Don't use any cable under 480lb. I'm going to have to make a new picture soon of a new rig soon.

I am sure Buzzy4p has long since finished his trip to Myrtle beach but there is something to be said about catching small sharks with light tackle. For someone with a $39 Wall Mart Rod and Reel Combo some $2.00 wire bottom fishing rigs and some frozen squid You can really have a blast. Although I know it doesnt compare to atching the big Fish.
I catch a lot of pier sharks and inshore sharks on Shrimp and squid. I use a medium light rod and a Steel Leader of about 18 Inches. I also have steel bottom rigs that are Double hook and have a bottom to attach a bank sinker. If I figure out how to attach a pic I will \I catch Atlantic Sharpnose and Bonnethead mostly. The waters I fish in Savannah GA are not that different then Myrtle Beach. Haven't ben out since i was on leave In August because I am in Iraq with the Army but cant wait to get back and do some Shark Fighting!!!! |

Just a bit of humor, combining my job here with my favorite hobby. If anyone gets a chance and wants to check out my new shark fishing site I updated it recently. SHARKFIGHTER.COM
