Chum for Makos

Anybody notice a chum that seems to attract Mako? Or is it completely up to chance?

Drew is right on the money.I save all the guts and a few heads from the trips and in november i usually head out to the swordie grounds and start a drift using those and lots of blood chum mixed in with CaptMarks sardine chum!

Back here in New Zealand ,alot of our top skippers use fresh skippy or albacore ,as these are the two main types of prey regulary encounted during the height of the season. Usually the trick is too whip off a couple of fillets, and mince the frames in a plunger every couple of minutes or so.These are very oily fish,however any thing would do as it's a free offering

Up north I use to fish for Mako in June and then on every early season tuna trip and later on Canyon lay over I would always set a bait out for Sword which usually got eaten by Mr. Mako. The chum we always used was home a made combination of Bluefish/Mackeral/Bunker and Tuna. This chum was bloody and oily and boy did it make a nice slick.

I like the idea of grinding up the sword carcasses, mix in a little bunker oil and Marks Chum and see what it draws in. I been trying to get my buddy's to leave early to do some sharking before setting up for sword fishing.

Best chum oily and bloody, if you ever have room for another person give me a shout, I have a ton of Shark/Mako fishing. That is why switching over to Swording down here was so easy to do for me, it is pretty much the same type of fishing.

To be honest with you, Mako is my favorite fish to catch. They are impressive, fight like there is no tomorrow, their arial display is second to none and their dentures are impressive.

Seems like you have been laying low on this forum lately. I saw a few of your posts on the other forum but not much lately.

I last saw you at the DSOM II meeting hangin with the Bulls but I did not get a chance to chat. Another time.

Looked like you were trimming down. Are you getting better to be able to get out there again like your older wild-man days?

Here's a couple questions for you.

How would you compare your harpoon to the Poons harpoon? Maybe you would like to start up another topic post for that response, comparing it to other harpoons and perhaps to a flying gaff. Plug in a little advertising at the same time.

Can you also please explain how you prep. a shark to ensure that it is excellent to eat? ie. Makos. I have heard that shark meat can contain high levels of urea that may be mixed in with circulatory system. I guess a quick bleeding would help. Are you fine tuned on the best technique?

Up off NJ I just use a bucket of good old, fashioned bunker chum. I use the filets of bluefish for bait, then I hang the rest of the bluefish carcass over the side on a rope to add a little more scent.

Always chum for makos...and swords. Chunk too down here and get a lot of high bites. Wouldn't have it any other way! We use bunker chum, or mackeral if we can't get bunker.
