I use to fish for sharks in florida off the old skyway bridge ,potters pier, indians rocks pier , madiera beach pier , and pier 60.Pier 60 shark fishing is not allowed but i worked on the when back then so i could get away with it and it was quit productive for bulls and black tips to about 5 ft.I usually used a penn 6/0 reel with about 30 lb tes line and a 200 lb test steel leader.Tackle depends on what size shark you going after.I eventually moved up to a penn 12/0 when fishing on the old skyway bridge (This was back before they made it a pay fishing pier)i use to go out the feench thay had about 3/4 of the way out on the north side. I would hang out there for several days at a time shark fishing . OH THE GOOD OL DAYS.. IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS ASK AWAY I WILL ANSWER THE BEST I CAN.

On tons of piers they don't allow it, with the rationale that you're "attracting" sharks to the area, and there are usually people swimming within 1/4 mile of the end of the pier. That said, I like a 6/0 wide with 60 lb when pier-bound. When on a boat, I'd rather have that same 6/0 Wide spooled with 100-125#. I use about 10" of #12 single strand wire and an opened-up Mustad 15/0 circle hook when on a boat. On the pier, you'll need a bit more wire to deal with chafing and the angle at which you'll fight the mighty shit eater. Go with 4-6' of seven strand wire at ~250# test. You'll have to crimp the latter wire, whereas you can haywire the former.

If you are going for the big boys and have a rod and reel that will allow you to put bates out 300 yards out or so you can try kayaking you bait out and dropping it off out there. When I do this one person kayaks the bait out while the other person watches the reel for the pre-marked section of line on the spool telling the person how much line we have out. When we get to the desired distance my friend radio's me and I stop and drop! We used to no have radios and used mirrors to signal when to drop.
