I used a STIKIT flying gaff for the first time this summer and it quickly subdued a fiesty slob of a thresher! It seems pretty much indestructible...

Solo products are very nice... I've sold their products for 2 years now. StikIt takes to the next level IMO and you'll never bend their gaff heads.

I have been waiting about 1 year for the guys at Stik-It to finish with all the new designs and they are stocking up. I hope to place my order this week.

So if anyone wants to check them out... come see me.

StikIt gaffs have a good web and act like an I-beam as far as when a direct pull or constant, even pressure occurrs - in the proper direction. Only problem (bending) is they can "corkscrew" (quickly) as pressure becomes lateral... and corkscrews are basically straight. I'd prefer a hook that flexes a little and still looks like a hook after a worst-case-scenario boatside battle. The question you should ask yourself is: "Will this fail me completely or just show signs of stress when it REALLY hits the fan?"

Easy Pescador,

The one thing I like about this forum site is that when someone voices their opinion it doesn't get pummeled or degraded. It is, by far, the best site for friendly information and advise.

exactly right Jim.
i try to release sharks also, but with the time you find yourself in some kind of danger too, the big ones aren't that easy to handle than a big blue Marlin female is, on big ones mostly i bring out the gaff and they feed the pueblo on the BBQ. have to mention that i don't target Sharks on my fishing, just get them on the line sometimes when looking for billfish close to the underwater reefs on the banks. so i am talking about a few each year.

No Pescador I dont feel bad because cows and chickens are bred to be eaten and also are not about to go extinct. Cows and Chickens have not severely declined in numbers and wont go extinct if we keep killing them.
Many shark species in the northwestern Atlantic have declined by more than half in just the last eight to fifteen years. In particular, the Great White Shark has diminished by about eighty percent along the coasts of the United States and Canada. Declining shark numbers isn't just a problem for sharks; it's a problem for the oceans' environmental balance. You take away the shark, the top of the undersea food chain, and the effects are going to be disastrous for the rest of the oceans' food chain.

Agreed... on ALL counts:
1 - All opinions are worthy of evaluation - sorry if I seem to be PICKING on / degrading anybody - just giving my opinion that a 100% catch & release fishery is a pretty unreallistic objective unless mandated
2- Life IS a choice
3 - SOMETIMES the choice is to take a fish home... when you've made that decision, you want your gear to work
4 - 100% kill fishing is also 100% irresponsible
5 - We should all try to release our sharks; don't forget to TAG them before you do - the stats & research are important
6 - Not using a gaff AT ALL... EVER??? pretty unlikely
7 - No, I'm not part of any South Beach forums... just love fishing and try to give a bit of mechanical insight where I see potential for mechanical failure when it really matters

tight lines!
