Default Ideal Mako reel for canyon fishing?...

I'm bummed that the mako season just ended out here in southern Cali, but I want to know exactly what I should use next year (my second actual year of shark fishing) when going for giant makos in canyn ares... I currently own an Avet ex pro 50 narrow spooled with 400 yds of 80lb izor spectra and 150 yds 80 lb p-line mono topshot... My other shark rig is a Tiagra 50 narrow spooled with 450 yds of 150 spectra and 100 yds 100lb suffix mono topshot... I chose the 50 narrows because my friend had problems with the wobbling of his 50wlrs's---But I still wonder if I have enough capacity when and if a huge bitch mako makes a dive in one of those canyns... should I get a wide 50, and if so, what is th best one?....

One thing I forgot to mention is that I am trying to shift over to american made fishing reels... I have the shimanos and they have been great, but I have been happy with my ex 50 narrow thus far... If the 50wlrs is the best then so be it... I'll buy it, but are the avet 50 wides as good?...

We fish 50 wides, since they are light enough to transfer between people easily and such for long battles. We spool them with 130 spectra, and use a 200ft wind-on leader as the top shot.

We have been closed to be spooled when we were fishing 30's.

A big mako can put on some heat, but dont be afraid to give it some serious drag, especially out of the rold holder or a chair

Good Luck

Yeah, sadly my guess is that the 50wlrs is still the best 50 wide availale... I hate to stick to a freign company's products, but I don't seem to have much choice here do I?...

Avet 50 wide is my reel of choice...I have a few and they are awesome. Never tried the quad drag yet, but it seems like overkill unless you find that 1000 lber.

Forgive me if I sound naive, but why are Accurates so damn expensive?... are they worth the $?... If they are then I'll pay, but please let me know what makes them as good or better than a tiagra or an Avet...

i cant tell you why . all i now is that the drag is the BEST. at least for my boss magnums u couldnt make me buy a different kingfish reel.i feel the same way about duels why would u spend $1500 to reel backwards , i can go to k mart and buy a spinning reel for 19.95 and hold it upwards and reel backwords too.

I do not have an Accurate reel; although, I believe that they are so expensive because 5 years of annual maintenance is built into the price. I read it somewhere while browsing the web a while back.

If that is indeed correct, then their after warranty value should be directly comparable to the Shimano-Penn league of reels since the maintenance plan is expired.

Default Mako Reel

We use( 4) 80 penn's with 100 lb. mono on standup rods. Plenty of line, no rushing around the boat. I have been doing this for the past 17 years.
