How do you guys kill a mako after you catch one? We've caught three swordfishing and my Mossberg 12 gauge sawed off did a good job, and so did my freinds 30./06, and my dad's semi auto AK-47. Is there a better tool for the job?

I always carry my .40 HK on my boat. If i get something menacing I don't want to release i introduce myself.
When i use it i leave a round in the chamber, take out the clip, and only take off the safety when i have him in my sights. That way i don't have any accidental discharges. This has worked for me but i think that CaptKen's method is the safest. |

Boca Sword Slayer:
I haven't yet had the opportunity to shut down a Mako fish once landed in the boat. But I would say that most any firearm will help with the situation and I would assume that you are taking your shot outside of the boat. But bear in mind, some bright-eyed politicians have successful put into law, ie. Fla. statutes, that you cannot use a firearm to kill foodfish anymore. So therefore, you could find yourself in violation, should some LEO personnel decide to follow the lettter of the law. Just as an FYI. But you may want to try this sometime: try putting a few splashes of 80 proof or higher spirits into both sides of the gill slits. Now this would probably only be practical after you have boated the fish. I have seen this and done this before to other fish and it settles them right down; it is amazing. |

RT,
Did not know about that law; Thanks for the FYI. By the way, great point, SHOOT ALL YOUR FISH WHILE THEY ARE IN THE WATER. Otherwise you will end up with holes in places you don't want, like the hull, gas tank, foot, or all of the above. I think this law serves the same purpose as the harpoon law. It is meant to discourage people from just shooting fish. I think puting them (makos)down b4 boating them is a must. Besides i'd rather get a ticket than get injured. This is just personal preference but the 80proof goes down my gills in celebration when the rare Mako is boated. Best of luck with your fishunting! |

Capt. Ed:
Yes, you're right. I was checking out a Florida statute a while back and noticed that wording. I do not think it was the same back in the 80's. I have no idea what the federal regulations are. So sure, beyond 3 miles out on the east coast you may be on track. But it is still not a good idea to take pop shots at a fish inside the boat. These higher power weapons seem to keep the projectiles going a bit further. I have experienced holes in coolers and beyond that even, and walls to attest to that generalization. I am usually pretty good about providing supporting information. I think I had a post previously that had a hot link direct to that section of the Florida Statutes, either for 2004 or 2005, if anyone is interested to review. But a Google search works pretty good too. I yearn for the day when the governement can stop micro managing our behavior like it used to be in years gone by. There seems to be too many laws these days; but I suppose it is proportional to the quantity/quality of our present population. Not to mention all of the retired Condo-Commando old-biddies that want a law for/against anything. (Please no offense to the older crowd, in general, I am nipping at your heals. But don't expect me to live in a condo. I would really hate to start complaining because somebody does not have a cover-up while returning from the pool.) |

No. I would rather have everybody else complaining. What I meant is that you would only catch me dead in a Condo. Association. I think that once you move into such a place it somehow etches into your soul. Next thing you know it, you start complaining about things, a little at a time. Before you know it, you are a full blown Condo. Commando, raving and complaining about anything that Moves (or anything that doesn't move within an unreasonable amount of time.) Obviously, I am only picking on the Commando Elitests but you get the Stereotype.
I don't want to get old like that. I need briny breezes in my face while skipping over the water like a song, while hanging on the deck of say a nice big contender with triples to get you there fast enough before you even have time to start to think about something to complain about. Sorry about the ranting: just that I have heard too many stories of people that can't keep trucks, boats, and trailers in these Associations. And this army of residents are no longer the "Good Ole Boys" that are influencing our present day Statutes, that keep nibbling away at our personal freedoms. I do not like the trend. Maybe we need to provide a shot of spirits in their gills; although not fatal, it may just loosen up all that stiffness a bit. Oh, by the way dispatching Makos was the topic. Can anyone re-rail this thread please. |

I hear you loud and clear RT.
I live in a corner house and have always had boats there. Once i had a 30 footer that looked like it was going to jump over the fence. Never a complaint. A couple of years ago i had a 20ftr of which you could only see the t-top from the outside. I got a letter from the county saying that i cannot have anything parked on the corner side of the house and that i had to move the boat to the rear or non-corner side of the property. Otherwise i would get a 500.00 dollar ticket. Turns out that there was a house up for sale in my coldesack and the realtor complained to the county. Now i have to pay for storage. You could only imagine how i felt. I pay taxes like no tomorrow and i can't park my boat in my house. This is a trauma. I'm so pissed just telling the story that i'm shaking. As far as i know this is a county code that only applies to Dade. Ok, that's enough. Back to fishing damit!!! |

Nothing dumber than an excited fisherman with a gun in his hand......
If you want to kill him tail rope him and drag him backwards for a while .... and while doing this rake his gills with the pike on your cockpit harpoon.... After a bit, pull just enough of his body in to clean and gut... NEVER go near the head, Ive had gutted makos come after me.... Watching some dumb ass beat a beautiful yellow fin with a base ball bat was another thing I never want to see again... Guns and baseball bats spell Dumb **** aboard ... Sorry just my .02 |

Dantilu,
"Guns and baseball bats spell Dumb **** aboard" You must be an anti-gun liberal. Be carefull who you call "dumb ****". You think you sound cool with a post like that? NO you don't. Try not to be such a jerk on your posts. Shark Tagger, Greetings. I can state various reasons why a gun on board is a good idea but i'll give you just one. YOU ARE ALONE IN A VERY BIG OCEAN!!! This goes double for those of you with new, nice, shinny, and expensive boats roaming islands. How you like them two cents |

Wahoo,
I'm sure my gun collection (I live in the woods of Maine, guns are like toilets every house has to have'um) makes me not a freakin liberal and as far as guns on a boat, They dont belong on a boat to "KILL FISH PERIOD"....... That is more dangerous than the fish itself!!! Read.... "I did not say there were not guns on my boat, just not for shooting at fish". I've killed my share of large sharks and I have never needed a gun, I leave that to the DUMB ASSES......! P.S. If you go back and read what I wrote I never called anyone a Dumb ****..... I just stated that guns and bats Spelled D.F. aboard if you are affected by my .02 you just maybe one of them...? |

Dantilu,
I'm going to disreguard you. I can tell exacly the type of person you are by the way you write. Don't ever insult me again. If you plan to, back it up by telling me the next time you will be in town and where. To everyone else who is reading this please note i don't have my gun on my boat to shoot fish. It just came in handy once for that purpose. FYI. I think bats have their place too. Anyone who has mistakenly boated a large green fish will tell you the same. I'm done. |

would a knife to the brain then tail dragging it kill it? You could tie it up nicely and clean it later when more space is available. A gun to me seems like over kill. You wanna shot something that much join the army and go to a combat zone. And why bring a AK-47? Hell in that case why not bring a Mach 19 or a .50 cal machine gun. Or maybe call in an air strike on it.
