Hello all-
I recently came across this site and can already see there is more information here than I may ever be able to soak up. Congrats on the nice forum. I am from Indiana so I have no experience fishing saltwater, however I will be vacationing in Destin this coming September and I am looking forward to trying my luck doing a little surf fishing for sharks (or whatever else I may catch) while I'm there. So far I have gathered that I will need a good long surf rod, a heavy duty reel capable of holding a lot of 65lb+ braided line, and good long HEAVY duty leader with a saltwater circle hook. It sounds like any fresh, oily fleshed fish will work well for bait with mackerel being at the top of the list. Most of it sounds like fishing for 40+ catfish up here in the Midwest - to an extent. So with all that in mind - and feel free to correct me if I missed anything - where do I go? How do I find a good spot? Any suggestions outright on good places, or at least some insight on how to find one? Keep in mind I am basically in the same boat as any tourist...unfamiliar with the area, limited resources, and lack of experience with saltwater. Any information anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Ben |

Intentionally shark fishing from the beach is not legal in the area. They say that with your bait you will be attracting sharks to the beach and close to all of the bathers. That's not to say that you can't go at night to Okaloosa Island and get away with it, but be ready to feign ignorance if cops do arrive...which they often do. You've got the setup right. Sharpen your hooks. Have fun. Stay out of jail.
