Default Golfito, Costa Rica

Last week boats were back to getting up to 20 sails a day but this week things have slowed. We fished Sat. with 2 wahoo, 2 tuna and 3 dolphin along with seeing a blue around 500lbs.. Sun. was very slow with one sail sited and 2 tuna and some dolphin. There is some very good water moving our way that has produced some good marlin bites!

Jan. has some very good sailfishing with a few marlin thrown in. It is the beginning of the prime sailfishing season with Feb. and March being the peak. I personally like Jan. better just because there are more shots at other fish while your sailfishing were Feb. and March are more just sails. Thanks Greg

I not sure which area your trip is to,looks like Los Suenos. But down in Golfito, both months are very good. We have excellent all year fishing unlike most of Costa rica. If I had to choose I like after the full moon in Dec.. Some good shots at sails, possibly up to 20 shots a day and the smaller marlin are pretty common. Last year which was slow we saw a marlin almost everyday. They are in the 150lbs.-350lbs. range. There is also Dorado and smaller tuna around like 30 lbs..

Thanks for the info. We are going to Los Suenos and most likely will try to go after Christmas while the kids are out of school, this will put us as close to the start of the season as we can. I heard it cranks up in January and Los Suenos had great numbers from their tournament in January in the past years.
I will double check the moon phase, which phase do you find the bite better in that area?

Generally, for sails our crew likes a couple days after the Full and New moon with the full being better. I think in Dec. you will be fine. Pretty much all of Costa Rica starts to have great fishing from Thanksgiving to April 1st. after the 1st of April most of Costa Rica slows, were we pretty much still have good fishing. It is just more marlin and tuna, farther offshore and less sails. Good luck! If you ever down our way drop us a line...
