Default Fishing Report for Jan 28th & 29th

I got lucky and got my boss to let me take Mon & Tues off. My visiting brother, a former captain of the Quetzel at HI, and I headed out to soak some bait.

Monday was a beautiful day on the water, albeit a little cold to get started. We drifted with a kite in 100-120 off Commercial Blvd for a couple hours with only a few KF cutoffs. So we pulled the baits and headed offshore. in about 750' we found a picture perfect rip current holding a lot of junk and running due north. The groundswell was coming out of the north and was around 4 give or take. Raised a billfish on the teaser and cranked the short bait up and got tight. We got him to the leader and it spit the hook boatside. We are unsure of what exactly it was; we never got a good look at the dorsal or pecs. It was about 5'-6' and silvery and stripey. Could have been a sail, but out six miles? It wasn't crazy enough to be a white marlin...we are guessing it may have been a small blue or possibly a spearfish. Anyway we picked up a pair of 10# dolph on the way in on the inshore rip (about 300' off of Boca).

Tuesday we got out and tried to find the same rip again but the wind was coming around and breaking everything up so we headed inshore to kite fish. We set up in 180' off Delray and had a nice NW drift. Got the bite in about 150 with a dbl header on the short and long kite baits. The short one got off, but we got the long one in. It had the hook just below the eye socket, so we brought it in to get dehook and put it back in for a revive and release.

We Reset back out at 200 and got the bite again in 150. A single pez vela and leadered it.

On the third drift the wind came around almost from the south which pushed us along more north than in. By the time we got into 120 we got a KF bite on a livie down in thae basement, and a school of 'phins rolled in and started harassing our kite baits. The long and short get eaten, and the middle bait gets beat to death before the schoolies head for the stern and we start light-tackling them. Halfway thru the melee of 'phinning my brother looks around and sees a sail chewing on the dead gog still on the kite. We got tight on it, but the rig had a stinger and it got wrapped around the barb..so # 4 for the day jumps off.

Final tally for 2 days:
2x 10# 'phin
1 ?? billfish
2/4 on the sails
1 snake kingfish
9 schoolie 'phin

I gotta get off week days more often!

I heard of a spearfish caught a few weeks ago so anything is possible. The guy didn't even realize it until I saw the pictures and pointed it out to him.

Weekends do suck. Good report!

Thanks! it's awesome when there aren't a lot of other boats out there and you get the 'first crack' at 'em!
