I am in the market for a power wrapper, and would like to know if there are any advantages of one over the other? I also would like to know if anyone has purchased a complete rod kit from Mud Hole, and how the quality is? I eventually will start picking the parts individually, but would like to practice on the kits to get back in the hang of it. My current rods are all Dean Burley Customs, and I spent many hours in his shop throughout the 90's. Any help is appreciated.
I'm not going to start easy either, as I already have a 4 color 4-sided solid diamond in mind for the first pair. Thanks for the replies. Jim

I have the Pac Bay and it is a good wrapper. You can make your own wrapper ALOT cheaper and it will come out twice as nice and way more functional than the ones that you can buy. Several companies sell motors or you can rip one off an old sewing machine.
What happened to Mr. Burley, I went in there a bunch of times over the years and it was always an experience. He does build some nice sticks, thats for sure. Does the shop no longer exist? |

AG, I have been looking on e-bay for the motors, and you can get them for like $40 including shipping. The other major costs I guess would only be a drying motor, and that fancy three jawed chuck if I decided to go that way.
As far as Burley goes, I lost touch with them when they moved out of the warehouse over there by the executive airport. I used to work two blocks away, and would stop in after work pretty much every day. Steve Osmond that works at Boyle's builds a bad azz rod too. I have been friends with him since the early TR Tackle days back in the 80's and 90's. He worked at Burley's for a while too. It is just a long drive from Davie to Deerfield to say hey to them. I usually stop by though when we take Todd's(Pushbutton2) boat out of Boca. I think I may just go the build my own way. See you at the JD party tomorrow. Jim

I have a Pac Bay and it is a good machine. Standard three jaw chuck is fine. I have built and finished over 100 rods with it from spinning to 130 class. I have also used it on gaffs, Tag sticks, mop handles and nets. Cant say anything bad about it. Need a separate drying motor f you build several outfits at the same time. I have seen it for sale at Cabela's with a separate drying motor for free.

I have a pac bay, and I didnt care for the plastic chuck. I upgraded to the deluxe chuck(aluminum) and it was worth the extra.
I also have bought a St Croix rod kit from mud hole. It was a complete kit minus the thread and epoxies. I am going to get a couple more when I get by there again. I would recomend them d-a |

Dean lost the lease when the property was sold on US1 to Wayne Hyzinga`s son . (sorry for the name spelling) I haven't been there in a while but they were building a big marina and dry storage between all the condos and wanted everybody out to bring the building down. Dean built nice sticks for years when he was in the old warehouse. Big RED was the guy who helped Dean in many ways get into the retail space. This was a big help to Dean cause a boatload of trouble was on his back at one point. Red was working for the former property owner for years as a builder. Gotta feeling his job went south with the economy too. Dean vanished off the planet as far as I know

The deluxe chuck is worth the extra $$$$$$ Also make sure to wrap a rubberband around the butt on the blank before you chuck it up. This allows you to really tighten the chuck and keeps the chuck from loosening. It really sux when a rod falls out of the chuck especially when its drying and the epoxy falls and destroys everything you've worked so hard on... NOT that thats ever happened to me ![]() I have never personally wrapped any of the Mudhole kits but I don't see why you would have a problem. You could always use an old broken rod or a cheap blank to test with which I recommend especially for finishing it does take some time and patients but after your finished you'll appreciate that rod so much more because you built it. Good Luck! |
