Default Rod Modifications by beginner

I have ebayed a couple of trolling rods and when they got here I noticed the reel seats were too cheap for my reel. These are not going to be quality rods like I've been reading about here, but I would like to modify them rather than put them on someone else. They are rated 30-80# with rollers all the way. Compared to my star rods, which have no rollers, they are larger in diameter at the tip. They appear to be solid fiberglass. Could I remove the grips and reel seats and get some better components and reapply without destoying the rod? Could it be that simple? I have clicked the link to mudhole and saw that they carried a lot of supplies. Any suggestions?

I woundn`t mess with it depends if they are expoxited in place then you cant remove them .. but with a lot of heat ! that will break down the grafite or fiberglass .. best to leave them the way they are ...I have a few rods I wanted to do the same to ... I was told to leave them alone ...good luck hope this helps you ..Willi

you can cut them off with a dremmel and cutting wheel. the butt grip you can use a razor knife and "filet" them off. the only problem you have will be putting the new reel seat on. it has to be larger ID than the butt OD. the new grip will have to be nice and soft with the ID only slightly smaller then the OD there it meets the reel seat. if you make a tapered guide to simulate the taper of the rod and attach it to the butt of the rod it will be easy to slide the new grip in place while it is warm and stretchy. where theres a will theres a way.
