Default Ian Miller Grips

Justin,
I am assuming you mean the fore-grip. These are generally made
by first installing a firm material like cork, then shaping the cork
to be tapered down at the ends. This is then wrappen with leather strips. These strips can be solid black or have silver or gold stripes in them. The strips are then secured to the cork by wrapping thread around the ends. This thread is then wrapped down the tapered end of the cork. The thread is then finished with epoxy, the same stuff as used over the guide wraps.
Good Luck...

If you scroll down to "building a sword rod part 1" you can see the pics of my leather grips that I just installed.

I bought my leather grips from Biscayne Rod in Miami, the leather was wrapped over a hard EVA material. I installed hte grip and then sanded the tips down to fit my blank. I then coated the ends with a hard 5 min epoxy, and sanded that down too. THen i wrapped the ends, coated them with standard finish, and wrapped them again and finished. The reason for so many steps is that the EVA really lets the air out and will bubble up like crazy unless it is really sealed well.

in reference to ian miller grips,
cork is the correct material to use under leather,
a cork sheet cut into strips of about 25mm then laid upon each other until you have desired thickness.
each layer should be glued either with an epoxy 5min or an water proof contact glue.
the cork is then sanded to make two nicely shaped cones and then i normally paint the cones black before
