I like a 4" hook. 4' handle or 6'....both have their place.
Question: Why do most people say to "always gaff over the fish's shoulder"? Why not "underhook" gaff? |

ledgecrawler, you get better control when you hit em in the shoulders, plus the belly meat on many fish will rip sooner than shoulder meat
you pretty much gain control of a fish once you control his head, but you get his tail and his whole head starts flying around, helllll-o mr. leverage. |

I fish from 40'+ sportfisher type boats. I go for the head or shoulder, and gaff from the side of the boat. The angler is halfway up the cockpit at the gunwhale, and I come in from the stern side of them. That way the angler is bringing the fish up alongside the boat, right in front of me. It also keeps me from gaffing across the line, which is something you really never WANT to do. If the angler and I were to swap positions, I'd almost always be gaffing across the line, which just begs for getting tangled up and losing a fish.
The only fish that I gaff on the ventral side is a grouper. They come up blown up with their bellies toward the sky. I hit them across the throat or in the mouth. Either way, it doesn't tear out and it's a very solid and prominent target. Never go for the belly with the gaff. We've all hit fish in the guts, but nobody likes to be Captain Gutshot. |
