Like a lot of things in life,

Stick it out there slowly,
Dont swing it like a man man,
Lower it in,
Penetrate,
then pull it back,
Bingo!

Usually try to get a head shot on them but a lot of times I get them in the back or in the stomach.

I like a 4" hook. 4' handle or 6'....both have their place.

Question: Why do most people say to "always gaff over the fish's shoulder"? Why not "underhook" gaff?

ledgecrawler, you get better control when you hit em in the shoulders, plus the belly meat on many fish will rip sooner than shoulder meat

you pretty much gain control of a fish once you control his head, but you get his tail and his whole head starts flying around, helllll-o mr. leverage.

i always try for the head. i perfer to gaff on the side of the boat. but for inboards it depends trolling the side usually, and drifting where ever the are.

I agree with you rampage I prefer to gaff on the side of the boat however the prop wash doesn't really bother me.

I aim for the head, but really don't care as long as the fish gets in the boat

I fish from 40'+ sportfisher type boats. I go for the head or shoulder, and gaff from the side of the boat. The angler is halfway up the cockpit at the gunwhale, and I come in from the stern side of them. That way the angler is bringing the fish up alongside the boat, right in front of me. It also keeps me from gaffing across the line, which is something you really never WANT to do. If the angler and I were to swap positions, I'd almost always be gaffing across the line, which just begs for getting tangled up and losing a fish.

The only fish that I gaff on the ventral side is a grouper. They come up blown up with their bellies toward the sky. I hit them across the throat or in the mouth. Either way, it doesn't tear out and it's a very solid and prominent target.

Never go for the belly with the gaff. We've all hit fish in the guts, but nobody likes to be Captain Gutshot.
