Default Fish Length Girth Formula

Anyone know the formula for figureing out the weight by the measurements ? My Buddy caught a whopper Tues night, He was 72" lower jaw to tail, and 52" girth, took um 45 min to get him in the boat once they caught him, then when they got home they couldnt get out of the boat up on the sea wall,They had to clean him in the boat .lol

This standard formula is just about on the money:

Weight(lbs) = (girth-in) x (girth-in) x( length-in)/800

52x52x72/800 = 243 lbs

Deans 349lb sword went :The fork length was 91 inches with a 56-inch girth.

56x56x91/800 =356lbs Not to far off.

Nevertheless, ,nice sword your buddy got.. I go by this formula quite often to avoid a late night haul to the scales. Unless I think I have something over 350lbs.

It works for many species of fish, but many fish require a different number to divide by. You have to catch one and weigh it to figure out the correct denominator of the equation.

Ya, its alot easier than making that 5am run to the scales.

Ya, thats pretty much right on the money with the denominator of 800. Although you may run into a porky sword one day that screws with the formula.

the weather looks great for the week of new years.. im going to try to get out just about everynight to test out some new products.

I will also be emailing a select few of you guys to test our upcoming products and give us some results on.

Tim, That formula is right on the money. The sword we caught on our last trip, shown in the new gallery was 71 inches long and had a 41 inch girth. 41x41= 1681 x 71 = 119351 divided by 800 = 149.18 pounds

Our 407 was 96" and 56" girth.

Formula says 376, but we know the scale is right, its the same one Dean used but the 56" girth was the same for a good part of the fish until the tail.

Because of natural variabilty, a "spread" of + and -10% is usually
associatedwith that formula. Full vrs empty stomach can be as much a
s 5-10lbs. Ron, you caught a phatty, a statistical outlier! cheers, arthur

The lenght X (girth)2
_____________
800
works on most species, but swordfish can vary from long and skinny to short and extremely fat. I think that it will stii give you a ballpark idea of how big the fish may have been.
