I have tried to catch squid while swordfishing over the years with no success. Now I have put very little effort into this, but I think people are catching them out there. I just do not know the right technique yet.
Last week we did have have some good size squid swimming near the boat. This was the first time I have seen them. They where just out of reach though. With all the squid we see in their bellies they must be fairly plentiful. |

I've picked them up a few times by Jigging a sabiki at the boat.. I usually snag them in the arse.
I guess the tinkers should be around now too eh? I hope this cold front gets fishing going for us! Mike

There is a sabiki made for squid jigging, check them out at your local tackle shop. I know LMR in Ft. Lauderdale has them. Sometimes you need to get your jig below the 100-200 foot line to find them.

There are specially made jigs for catching squid. We catch them while fishing in the Northeast canyons by either netting them or jigging the ones that we see come up in the spreader lights, or if you are marking bait at a certain depth drop the jig to that depth and jig them. They will also latch on to a piece of fish drifted back. I've even had problems with them eating and picking at our tuna baits (even live mackerel) and killing them or tearing them apart!

bass pro has a "squid jig" it is over by the sabiki's and dry chum..... does anyone think these are worth buying and giving a try? i have been thinking about this for a week or two..
also what does it matter if you catch one? and if you do should you reel in on of your squid and put that one out? |

hi purplefunk,
there is squid available pretty much every where you can think of. though most people have no idea that there are squid available at their very own favourite fishing spot! its a good idea to throw a few squid jigs around, especially in the evenings. catching squid is great fun and the squid are also great to eat...not just good bait! best of luck. cheers, george

I have a few of the glow jigs made just for catching squid. It's a hateful little device that has a glowing head and two sets of 14 hooks. You charge it for about 5 minutes under a bright light, then send it down to about 300ft on a spinner with braid. I've only used it out on the swordfishing grounds. When squid are in the area it produces. The squid I have caught on the grounds have been small.

i used to use those jigs when I lived up north with good success.. haven't tried them while swording, but i have dropped a sabiki rig down over 500ft and pulled up 12 inch squid more than a dozen times... ususally snag them I guess...using number 12 hooks that we caught the runners on...
I tried rigging a live one once, and he inked everywhere. I took some floss and put it through the mantle with an 11/0 hook and sent it out.. it took off from the boat quite nicely, but was dead when I reeled it up about 30 minutes later... Is there a better way to rig a live squid? |

did you rig the squid through the body or the wings? i am guessing that through the wings would be better.
cheers

I put the floss directory throw the mantle body... just a small pinhole...
no weight and let the squid take off from the boat with a glowstick about 12 feet back.. he took off about 50 yards and then down.. reeled him up about 30 minutes later after we thought he got wacked... We had a bite on a blue runner just before reeling the squid up.... |

it sounds like you handled the squid as gently as possible
...oh well i guess you might be out of luck....maybe you will find a tougher squid next time!?
