I have never used Tinkers, mostly because I cannot find them. A couple of times I seen them in my lights. Fished Friday night, it was beautiful on the way out, about 9:00 the weather blew up from the nw about 20 knots and my clients wanted to head in without the first bite. Inside the port we fished for Tarpon with live Gogs and found a nice one around 40 pounds. A few guys caught swords up to 80 pounds on squid, not much else was going on unless they stuck it out with weather, I haven't heard much. Till next time, Fish between the fronts.

I was also out the same night as hannaman. We had 1 slashed squid on our 300ft jug line, and then the weather came so we took off. I also found some goggle eyes on the fishfinder on the way it, so we caught about 3 dozen and have them in the pen for when the wind gives us a break
I also agree with hannaman, that sometimes the tinkers can be a pain in the ass to catch and runners are a given all the time. I have flying fish come to the boat all the time out there, I wonder how they will do at 300ft? Catch em up! Tim |

I feel that I get a better hookset with squid than I do a bridled live bait. Anyone else feel this way?
Who is fishing a stinger hook rig when fishing livebait. I started out doing this, but was finding that you can injure small fish when fishing this method. But it helps big time when you get a big fish come around that does not want to eat the bait, but just attack it.. the second hook can snag him good and with 11lbs of drag, I have landed fish that way. But, I don't use double hooks anymore.. I get a much bettter hook set with single hooks. Mike |

Hey Mike, I only use single hook rigs also. I get much better hook sets and less foul hook fished as you mentioned.
As for the new poll with the light color.. I pretty much use a different color on each rig. but I like the tricolor electralume the best becaue it is the brightest... I have to start keeping track of the fish I catch and what color light is used, although I don't think it matters..espically at 300ft right..? Tim |

I definitely get a better hook set with rigged squid. They suck it down rather then try and whack at it for a while like live bait. Unfortunately, at times we have gut hooked fish we would have rather released with rigged squid. But, at least when you have a slob on, you are more confident you will land it if you know it ate a squid. I don’t use stinger rigs.
Well, they were out there last night. We went 5 for 11. And all 11 bites were hook ups, the least amount of time we had a fish hooked for was a few minutes. They were thick, we couldn’t even get a full spread out there. Tinkers were everywhere, we must have put 50 in the livewell. We finished up with two in the box and a 25lbs Bull dolphin. Go get them. |

Yeah, the tinkers were about 100ft under the boat all night, occasionally they came to the surface. Also, had big sardines in the hydraglow. One of the swords we put in the box had a stomach full of the sardines. Caught them all on a sabiki. Yeah, I think everyone out there caught fish last night. The biggest one we put in the box last night was a little over 95. We released 3 around the same size.

I would find it interesting if there was a correlation between size of fish and depth that it was hooked. also, does the night of full/new moon affect the bite with swords as it seems to with other species. BTW I feel fortunate to have found this excellent site.

Tinkers should be out here now for the next few months. To see if they
are under your boat, fish a mackeral rig or a quilled sabiki with a little bait on the hooks and this is important, a large one lb diamond jig. Slowly jig it at different depths. Once you hook some, others will follow them up. chum helps to keep them around. also think dolphin fishing and try to keep a few hooked in the water at all times and use two rods. use a heavy duty rod because you never know what will hit. last year, after catching about 200 tinkers, i had a few on and something hit the fish so hard that my sabiki rod broke, in my hands, a split second before the line did! only trouble when you get the school near the boat and excited is that they will hit and pop all the balloons. cheers, arthur |
