Welcome to the forum mate...
This topic has been beaten to death.... But I will give you the general consensus. Balloons are better in that, if you tape the glowstick to the top, you can see the balloon flip very easily when a fish picks up the bait. Get yourself some quality balloons from party supermarket and they work well. We use electrical tape and put the glowstick directly on top. Good Luck. |

I'm no expert but heres my .02
I sometimes use baloons because there easy to bring. It is hard to round up 6 -8 jugs when fishing 2 or 3 nights in a row. I like how jugs perform much better, using telephone wire. I like my floats the best. You do not loose them, you only go through 1 light stick per float a night and I like how they perform. They stay on the line and go down with the fish, I think it keeps you tight if you happen to slack. Also they fall completly over instantly if a fish comes up, jugs you can't tell, and ballons do fall but not as apparent. IMO use what works for you! I have finally got my floats down pretty good. they have a 1/2'' female threads that a standard 15mm glow stick screws right into. no tape rubberbands etc. This keeps 80% of the glow stock up high and you don't get that peek a boo effect where it spins and you cant see it every time it turns. On the bottom of the pvc I am using snap swivels, and going around the main line and through a rubberband just like on the lp connection. Good luck! I do not like ballons because they take time to blow up and they break sometimes accidently, and they don't work as well in rough water! P.S I did not come up with the float idea! so i take no credit!

I generally use baloons in calm conditions & jugs when rough. I hear Cap't Ken has some cool party ballons that "STAND TALL"

Who really cares as long as the "float", whatever it might be does what is suppose to, and thats get the bait out awya from the boat.
I prefer balloons.....but dont use electrical tape, use clear packing tape, holds better and doesnt block the glow of the glow stick!

It's all personal preference, but the floats are the most effective IMHO. . . Turtle had a set and I basically copied his version with the wood dowel/pool noodle/long line clip. :thumleft:

I fish the floats! They can be adjusted by moving the noodle up and down the verticle dowel/pvc pipe depending on how much lead your fishing.
Also they tip over like you wouldn't believe and you can fish em in rough water. You only use 1 glowstick per nite, per float. and my feelings are that when the fish takes off in any direction he has bout 3-5 pds of drag pulling behind him with the float. Even if you can't reel fast enough the pressure from the floats keeps the tension on the fish. Barry you can post pics! I don't mind

I use jugs with 2 glowsticks, on the wax line from the rod I use a 64 rubberband attched to a telephone wire that is attached to the handle of the jug. It holds up pretty well and its easy to remove from the line just pull and snap rubberband.
But what would be great if you can fill a ballon with helium toss in the glow stick and attach it to the line put the weight and let it float out. And when theres a fish on there goes the ballon into the sky. I really gotta stop inhaling exhaust fumes! :high |

We went from balloons to jugs. Sucks when your long balloon pops because of seaweed or from something and you have to reset. I use break-away jugs and try to get them back if I can. I also noticed our ratio increased when we went to the break-away jug. What ever works for you... hb

Chaos,
Go to the rigging section and you'll find a 2 page sticky on this subject. Catching and Pachi7tre, Sounds like a good idea with the helium, but it won't work. When the helium balloon touches the water, the water sucks on to it and it won't float up into the air. I kite fish very often. When the wind dies we attach huge Helium Balloons to the kites, when this setup crashes and touches the water. Your done... Even if the kite doesn't get wet, the balloon really won't float back up. Good theory, but don't waste your time. |

I fished my first trip with balloons and I liked it. Then someone made me convert over to jugs. Why? Because we like jugs! I think now though I might be heading back towards my roots with the balloons. The balloons are easier to store than jugs and I like the fact that they tip over when there is a bite. I will probably wind up using a combo of both jugs and balloons.

I like the method of bouys. George and I switched due to the fact that the ruberbands chafe the line a little and when the baloon pops there is to much slack in our line its also les things we need to worry about and its better for the turtles. Our bouys are submergeable and they also tip when they get a bite. They are also easier to get off the line making checking baits setting up and even removing the bouy during the fight much less of a hastle. Most important the fact that it keeps pressure on the fish at all times, most fish have a hard time pulling them down or they just dont like to. Rember big enought to float but not to much or ot will pop ur line. We do use 80-100lb test so ours are larger if u want a few to try we can make some for ya, Pm me.

Started with milk jugs and soda bottles. Didn't like the thought of leaving floating trash in the water when you break it off. Moved to balloons. Didn't like the idea of leaving balloon trash in the water on a break off. Especialy when the balloon deflates and looks like a squid floating in the water. Don't want any turtles or other sea life to eat that crap and die.
Now I am intrigued at the float option. Looks like tool shed genius to me, and no by product trash for the ocean. The float descriptions are detailed enough to get me moving in the right direction, thanks for the info. I may look at modifying the long line clip to be a little loose on the line, that way if a big fatty pulls it under, the clip and bouy will be able to slowly slide toward the surface and avoid putting a point load on the line. Maybe even add a piece of surgical tubing over the line where the clip attatches as a bushing sleve ? Gotta play with the options a little, but the hampster is running on the wheel for this idea. Thanks !! |
